AC problem

No AC ! Put the gauges on (Hi and Low) reading zero. Found the low presure switch(that wasn't easy), pulled it off 3pins. How do I check to see if the compressor will run? If it does should I dump a can in w/dye or pull a vacum on the system to see if it holds?
