ABS light

I have an 02 grand prix se. I can't seem to get the ABS light to go off, one of the sensors was out of position and I put it back, but even that did not solve the problem. Anyone know anything about this?

Too bad you can't replace the sensor without the entire hub assembly...either do that or yank the bulb out of the dash.

Unless it happens to be an issue with the wiring, then you can just fix that.

Yeah, but it was an ignorant idea from GM that they didn't just toss another plug on it so you could toss the sensor in...hence why I have both of my ABS lights yanked from both of my cars.

If it's the wheel speed sensors, you can fix them but it's kinda a pain in the butt. Usually the sensor doesn't go bad on these. It's usually either the wiring or the sensor is dirty. I got sick of no ABS and having to replace the whole bearing when there was nothing wrong with it. This took me a good afternoon the first time. I wouldn't do this unless you have another bearing on hand in case you mess up.

Using a large bearing separator and a press, grab just under the bearing cover. It will nick the cover a little, but doesn't damage it. Press the bearing from the cover. Clean the sensor and re-solder the wire connection to the sensor. When putting the cover back on, put some locktite on the lip of the cover where it will meet with the bearing. I think I just used a rubber hammer to put the cover back on the bearing. The outer edge of the cover will need to be bent back down from being bent up when removing with the bearing separator. This I used a metal hammer for. Spin the bearing to check for the clearance between it and the rubber grease seal. Once it spins as it should, crush the sides of the cover down so it will fit back in the steering knuckle. The soldering and getting the cover at the right height so the bearing doesn't make any rubbing noise against the rubber seal took me the longest of the procedure.

Hmm, interesting. I will have to try this next time one of mine throws a light.

When I bought my GTP, the guy that sold her to me said that the ABS light had been on for 3 years and that it was nothing to worry about, because it was just a sensor. Yea, I had a buddy of mine look at it a couple months after I bought her (it really bothered him seeing that light on while he would ride around with me), he went to replace the rotors (one of them actually snapped in half because it was so rusted...) and found that the wheel bearing was going to need fixed because it too was rusting. Found a wheel bearing online and brought Celeste back to him. What we found when he got it out was that the wheel bearing was so bad that it, like the rotor, was split in half also. Thankfully after that, the light did go off.
