ABS and Tire Pressure Lights on

I Have a 1997 Grand Prix GTP. Got the car a week ago, and abs and tire press check lights are/were on. Rotors were getting down as well as pads. So just got new pads and rotors, and installed the rears today. While up on the jacks, with wheels off, I turned the car on to bleed the breaks, once the new rotors and pads were installed. The abs and tire pressure lights went out when it was on the jacks with no wheels on. Now that its back on all 4's, the lights are both back on again. Going to change pads and rotors in front tomorrow, but I don't know if that will cure the problem.

How can I fix this problem?????? I got a service manual, and it says you need to buy some T-100 or Tech 1 computer program to fix it. Is this true???

Please, all help is appreciated.

If it was fine with weight off the wheels, but bad with weight on the wheels, I'd guess it's probably a bad wheel speed sensor. If an ABS light is on, then take it to a shop that can read ABS codes and find out why it is complaining. It'll probably tell you which sensor to look at.

I would rather think it is a bad wheel bearing and with the weight off the wheels, the sensor didn't pickup and difference.

None the less, a garage with a scanner should be able to read the codes and tell you which one is bad.

ok, now this is wierd. Put on the front rotors and pads. Lights went off all the way. Drove up to aunt and uncles, and the fn things came back on when I was about 3/4 of the way there. I parked it on the street when I got there. I turned the car off. Then turned it back on, lights are off. Moved up onto the driveway, and the f'rs are back on again. Now sitting in the driveway they are off again.
Could it be a faulty plug, short or rip in a wire underneath the car some place? I'm guessing not to many have had this issue. Thanks for the responses so far, and maybe I'll be taking it to a dealer, who knows.

you have a bad sensor, or a bad wire, check near the hub as that is where the connector is, and many people break the tab off that holds it to the spindle

Every time you turn the car off, the lights will reset. When you start the car, the ABS does a self test. Depending on what is wrong, the code may come on then. Sometimes it can come on driving down the road, indicating a bad wheel speed sensor.

Get the ABS code checked to make sure which wheel is having the problem. Then I would change the hub and double check all the wiring and plugs are in good shape.

i am currently having the same problem. I noticed it when i got the car.. about 4 months ago. I have since hit a pothole the size of texas. i looked behind the rotor at the ABS Sensor and it was smashed. i do not know if it was from the pothole or what. Also I know completely wrong thread, but have you noticed is your sway bar broken?

Hey guys, been lurking on here for a while and this is the same problem I have with my 04. Same problem, same fix??
Thanks, Graham

I had the bad wheel speed sensor, no indication from the outside. the inner part where the copper wiring is got messed up. My front sway bar also just busted, clunk, clunk, clunk.

I just went through this and it was a big headache, ended up taking it to a mechanic friend. I had already replaced the hubs about 1 year ago , rechecked all that, new brakes, new tires ( old ones were worn on the inside from the bad bearings ) someone told me it was a bad BCM ("tuner") but it ended up being a broken wire in the harness up by the frame on the drivers side. I recommend that if your hub bearings are good to check the harness all the way to where it terminates, starting on the front. Have the system in the condition where the lights are on, then use a continuity tester to ring the wires in the harness from each wheel to check for an open wire. I wish I had thought of it before I had to pay my friend to do it. Everyone told me I had bad hubs.

I also have same problem but both front hubs were bad (210K). freplaced then light went out for a short time and now it's back. I will check wiring next. Thanks to all for the info
