A/C Troubleshooting

First of all, apologies if this was addressed in another thread. I looked at several of the other posts about A/C not working but none exactly match my problem.

Let's start with some basic info. I have a 2001 GTP. It has dual climate controls. This setup, http://images.gtcarlot.com/pictures/54589586.jpg different stereo, not important.
When I press the A/C button the light comes on and that is it. It just blows the same temp air as if the A/C were off. All my fan speeds work, heat is also just fine.
In my 3.8 Monte Carlo when the A/C is turned on I can feel the 'performance' of the engine drop a bit, also the sound is different. With my GP I am not having either of those things happen, the car runs and sounds the same.
I have checked and it appears that all wires are connected and nothing looks physically damaged. (I had the SC idler pulley melt and apparently explode and take out the belt.)
I have not checked the pressure, but because literally nothing happens when it is turned on I assume it is mechanical.

So, from my reading of other posts on similar problems, many are caused by the A/C clutch. Does it sound like mine is bad too?

when you hit the button does the AC clutch engage?

If not, you are low on freon or have a compressor issue.

Its best to have a shop do a AC check for cheap to know if anything is really wrong. Being that an AC system is sealed, it in theory should never lose any of the freon, so somehow yours got out or its a issue elsewhere.

Most common problem with ac is loss of freon. Easiest thing to do is add can of freon with stop leak in it. Might work and you have cheap fix, might not and your out $10.

I'm having trouble with the AC in my 03 and hope it's ok to post here. My system has enough freon in it, but won't run. I sprayed the lines with a garden hose under the air box while cleaning the engine compartment, and the AC compressor kicks in and the system blows fairly cold air. The compressor will cycle a few times then will over pressure the system and I have to manually turn off the AC. Both cooling fans on the radiator also start and will run. Once I shut the system off and restart it it will run and cool if I hit it with the hose again. Ideas? hi/lo pressure switch is there too.......I'm miffed
