Hey all,

Impala's acting up, 3 days ago, i go to start the car, back the car out of the driveway, put it in drive, and nothing. engine revs, rpms jump, no motion. no nothing, had to drive in reverse around the block just so i could put it in the driveway. the car has 138,000km on it (85 749 for imperial people) any ideas? i have 3rd gear but that it, been riding a bike 5 km to work and school. I could really use some help!!!!

Thank and much appreciated for help

Marcel

fluid was pretty dark, no burn smell, check engine light on. Ran the codes, it was for passlock (due to alarm system). took it out for a drive around the block today. reverse was fine. slippage in drive and 3 and 2. put it in low, it INCHED foward till about 20 kph then less slippage to about 60 kph, after that, car changes gear, everythings normal. ??????

Manual 1 range produces much higher pressure, as well as manual 2, for engine braking reasons to give a stronger clamping force on the clutches and also to hold a manual 1-2 coast band for engine braking when going down a steep grade. There is a large combination of things that can cause your problem but you likely have a forward band on its way out and your manual 1-2 band is probably not far behind it if it is slipping that bad in manual 1 range from a stop. If the forward band is badly burnt or the apply lug as cracked it doesnt have the clamping force it needs to hold the drum it rides on which gives you no take off and lots of slippage. Once the vehicle shifts into 2nd gear this component isnt required to do its job like in 1st gear so you dont notice the problem. If your car drives fine from 2nd-4th gear this is likely what you have going on. That is not to say you dont have pressure problems or valve body problems but is what commonly happens when the car does not want to move in 1st and is acting how yours is acting. Also something very common is a bad or severly worn out input clutch piston inner sealing surface. 9 out of 10 transmissions have one that is worn and often when this happens the car wont want to move unless you rev it up a bit and then it will bang into gear and work fine until the car cools down. Any way you slice it you need some internal repair or a rebuild.

I believe I can ship to Canada and the last quote I got was in the $400 ballpark. Not sure how far you are from the Detroit bridge but I could possibly help out on delivery as Detroit is only about 2.5-3 hours from here and would save you a lot of money and shipping time. I wont cross over the border so that would be up to you if interested.
