98 with leaking steering rack

im new to the forums, and im just looking for some help

Im working with a friend on his 98 gt and weve found the power steering fluid leaking from the drivers side where the tie rod and rack meet. we aren't sure if this means new rack, or if a seal is available, any help is appreciated

There is a seal kit available that will allow you to rebuild the entire rack, but once you pull it out to rebuild do you really want to do it again if you didn't get it right? It's not exactly in the best place.

If you want to try I recommend Lucas power steering stop leak. It worked on my rack up until Sat. when it completely gave out BUT it did buy me almost another 50K before it went.

Personally, I would replace the rack and the high pressure line and call it done. With probabaly at least 130K on it by now it's getting tired. The leak at the inner tie rod/boot area is your warning. BTW, the Magnasteer rack is freaking expensive if that is what that 98 has so don't be surprised at the cost.

I want to say NV7, but will have to verify that.

Easy way to tell, take a look at that big rubber boot that is covering the steering joint on the drivers side of the rack. You should be able to see this from the top of the motor looking below the brake booster. If you see a wire connection w/ 2 wires coming out of it attached to the rack, then it has Magnasteer.
