98 GT Trans Problem

Problem: About three weeks ago trans started slipping and eventually quit pulling. Shutting down the engine for 10-15 seconds and then restarting it would cause the trans to pull temporarily before it stopped pulling again. This could be repeated over and over.

I replaced filter and fluid, and everything was golden - for about three weeks. Problem has occurred again. Against my better judgement, I have done another filter and fluid change. The fluid was brown in color. Car is great right now, but I have the feeling that I have just postponed the inevitable. A friend thought one of the clutch packs might be coming apart and clogging the filter.

Any suggestions? Is a rebuild in my (near) future?

You already tried and found what I tell people does and will happen with your problem. Often the lockup clutch material in the torque converter is coming apart from over pressurization of the lockup clutch to prevent slippage and it tears itself up and ends up in the filter which causes it to plug up and make the car quit moving until you replace the filter. You likely need a rebuild or replacement. The torque converter clutch is likely on its way out and the valve body will be full of debris and you may have other internal problems or burned up clutches going on also but the only way to know is to take it apart for an inspecition.
