97 key issue

Right so i got a 97 GTP, Few questions about my key problems.

First did these keys come with chips from the factory? Iv owned 3 4th gen F-bodys and they all have a chip for VATS.

So i can only assume the grand prix got the same treatment, How ever my 2 keys are not orginal. Im worried someone might have yanked the security light out of the dash and it might give me problems when i want to replace the keyfob.. current one is broken.

I couldnt unlock my driver door with my key, and the ignition has always been a bit sticky. So today i pulled both door locks and disassembled them.

I found that the only reason my passenger door was unlocking was because the lock cylinder was broken, The driver door it looks like someone has just been forcing the key to turn for so long its made a grove inside the cylinder. all of the little tabs go the direction they are suppost to when the key is put in attcept the last one, this is the same for both doors.

The ignition is a bit tricky and turns a little hard, Plus after i turn it over once i can just pull the key out and start the car! So clearly this has been screwed with aswell.

I read somewhere cars over 10 years old get tossed out of the system at dealerships for cutting a new key. Anyone else heard this?

I don't want to replace all the doorlocks and the ignition, Im cheap right now tbh. I could go and get my current key recut but i feel like i would have the same problem..

Any input? what do :th_wtf:

I would pull the plastic cover around the ignition off and see if the wires have been cut/ screwed with...Not sure if 97's had the chips in the key's...I would assume so, but one way to tell is to look at your key and see if it has PK3, or at least the PK which stands for PassKey, that is the chip system used in our cars....If it was me I'd keep my key, and get the keyfob replaced! With the remote fixed you won't have to deal with the door locks at all. That red blinking light by the windshield is just a deterrant, if its unplugged it doesn't matter, mine doesn't work either. I'd cross that bridge with the ignition problem after you determine if it had been messed with before, or just old and in need of replacement.
