'97 GTP, Replacing Cruise Control Module...A Little Help Needed, Please! (PICS)

'97 GTP, the cruise hasn't worked since I got the car, so I think it's about time for things to work properly. ALL of my lights work including both of the 3rd brake lights, tail lights, headlights, fogs, etc. The fuse inside the car is good. A couple of days ago I replaced the old, worn multifunction lever (turn signal, washer/wipers, cruise/etc.) with a brand new AC Delco one and everything works on it, except cruise.

Is there a relay under the hood for the cruise or just the fuse in the fuse box next to the glove box? I see a micro relay under the hood that is labeled as "F/PMP SPD CONT". I'm thinking that it's got something to do with the fuel pump, but did see the "SPD CONT" at the end and thought it might have something to do with the cruise. I am probably way off, but it doesn't hurt to ask...lol.


The following pic shows the used module, same part number as the one being replaced. What I want to know is if that yellow ribbon (circled in yellow) that hooks onto the cable is supposed to be like a retractable seat belt type of deal, meaning once it's free from the cable is it supposed to "spring back" into the module (kind of spring loaded, so to say), or if it just hangs there? The reason I'm asking is because when I started to unhook the old one, I've noticed that the old cable has some resistance and it seems like if I completely take the cable off the module that yellow ribbon will spring back into the module. On the replacement module the ribbon doesn't move at all. Maybe it has to be all assembled (with the electrical connector connected) and on the car with it running for it to move? The stock one that's on the car now has got the electrical connector unhooked and the cable wants to snap back into the module, so not sure how that works.





The following pic shows the TB end of the cable, circled in yellow. How the HELL do you get this thing off? LOL I've looked at it for an hour, fiddled around with it, but am not taking any chances of breaking it in case I have to use it at some later point in time.




The 2 following pics show the differences in the cables, with the stock cable being the first pic and the replacement cable being the 2nd pic. The stock cable doesn't have that adjuster thingy on it, closest to the module, so will that make a difference or is either cable fine to use? My plan was to just keep the stock cable where it is and not have to mess with trying to get that black clip off it on the TB end of it and just swap out the modules themselves. Not sure if that's possible...?






I know this is a long post, but just wanted to be sure I had all my questions asked, with the help of the pics.
 


Okay, good to know that, thank you! Couldn't figure it out for the life of me and wasn't going to chance breaking it in case I can just keep it in place and swap modules.
 
FFDP, any ideas as to that yellow ribbon just hanging there on the replacement module? I can't pull it out, it doesn't move either way, would it have to be all hooked up for it to work like the one that's on it now? Just has me a little stumped. I'll be putting it on in the morning, just curious mostly. Would like to know it's a good used part BEFORE I go thru putting it on...lol.

Also, can I just use the cable that's on the car now instead of having to take it off? Just simply swap modules? I'm hoping that's the case, but I won't be suprised, after all, it IS a GP! LOL
 
Okay, ty. I did swap out the module, but still no cruise. The yellow ribbon does the retracting thing once the cable end is hooked into that connector at the end of the ribbon, btw.

I did get code p0719, so will be going somewhere to get a new brake light switch AND cruise control release switch. I did notice, when replacing the multifunction lever the other day, that both of mine are pretty loose on the pedal arm. Not pricey parts (~$20 for both) and probably need to be replaced anyhow... I do have brake lights and 3rd brake lights, tho.

I do have that issue where the ABS/tire pressure lights come on and the steering gets kind of stiff, but I removed the bulbs over a year ago as I got tired of looking at them. Just an issue of a bad speed sensor or broken wiring and don't feel like replacing hubs if they themselves aren't bad.

Woohoo!! I finally have cruise! It ended up being both the brake light switch AND the cruise control release switch. I had to walk away from it a few times, but it's done. LOL
 
You hit the nail on the head there! lol Hope I never have to do it again...Didn't help that the 1st cruise switch I bought was bad and the retainer broke! Then had to drive another hour round trip to get another one.

Now, onto the headliner...which I am not about to do myself. Been there, done that, glue was junk, etc. Gonna drop it off, hand the man some money and pick it up when he's done with it and call it a day.

Oh, and also ordered the U-bend delete from ZZP. Rear sensor is bad and my son couldn't get it out, so I'm going the easy route.

re covering the headliner is rather easy too. rubber cement in a spray can is your friend.

you need to take the foam off under the fabric, then it sticks good.
 
I've done one before, just not my cup of tea. I'm no mechanic, but I'd rather mess with other things besides those headliners...lol.
