My daughters 97 GT hesitates on acceleration and smells hot? Does anyone else have this issue? The engine was replaced with one from a 2000 Monte Carlo with only 35K intake was replaced and has been running great ever since. She recently had a Astro Start car starter put in but other than that nothing new. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

clogged cat maybe. at night drive it around a bit, (highway if possible) then stop and look under the car to see if its cherry red, then you know its clogged.

is the check engine light on?

Id look at the Cat convertor, Common failure and the Hot smell would explain it as well as the hesitation

Try getting the 'check engine light' scanned at a local Autozone or similar auto parts store. It takes 30 seconds, and it's free. They can usually print the trouble code out and you'll know where to start.

To the OP, I am having a very similar issue. I can sometimes smell the burning smell as well. What did you find out? I have no codes that seem to relate to that, just a P0410, secondary air intake system that came on long after the problem originated.

Does the car rev under load without any problems? mine will idle and rev in neutral or park and it sounds fine. Its only under driving load (in any gear) that i get the hesitation.

^^To this guy.

Have you checked the cat?

A good way to tell...is to buy an o2 sensor socket and remove the top o2 sensor in the back manifold and go drive it...if you don't get the hesitation anymore, then the cat is clogged.

Thanks bluegtp, i just drove the car around for a while and looked to see if the cat was red hot or not. It wasnt. Im guessing thats not a sure fire way to tell if the cat is clogged so i may try removing the o2 sensor like you say and plugging it. i took a video that i would like to post on here somehow as well.

Thanks for all your help! It was a plugged Cat. I work in a different state than my daughter lives in so I had her take it to a local shop and just as thought the converter was completely plugged. Had it replaced at a cost of just over $300 and the problem is resolved.
