97 Grand Prix GTP (driver Window problem)

So I've always had a problem with my driver side window. I bought new switchs for it, thought problem was solved but it wasnt, the window goes up, then seems like the power shorts out or something and i have to shimmy the window up with my hands.
So
I bought new switchs again seems like it worked fairly but it goes up and stops, i wait 15 min and its goes up lil bit more (repeat the process for a while, before i just get pissed and i push the window up by hand)

MY question is:

which of the following is it...
Window Regulator
Window Motor
Track problems?
dirt inside of there to cause it to slow down?
i noticed same thing with my passenger side window its not the fastest ever, but it doesnt do the same thing it still goes up the whole way, just takes few seconds extra.

My son's 97 Grand Prix GT 2 door was doing the same thing, so I bought a new power window regulator on ebay for $50 and installed it tonight. without the window in, the track goes up and down quickly. When I put the glass in, the window starts going slow and stopping again. It must be the tracks, or the mount to th regulator. It seems like there is too much play in the window and it gets cocked one way. I ran out of time tonight and will let you know what it is once I fix it.

I have the same problem just as you described. It seems like when the window goes up it cocks one way just a little, and thats where I have to shimmy it a little and it goes up a little more and just stops dead etc..

Bump - old thread but did you find a resolution for this?
I drive an 02 Grand Prix GT coupe and my windows have similar problems, especially the driver side. Window goes down fine but is a little slow coming up. Sometimes it doesnt come up at all, press the button and nothing happens. Wait a few seconds and try again and then it works

Any body have any ideas?
 
Guys, sorry for the delayed reply to this. Once I fixed it, I completely forgot to post what I ended up doing.

So I had the new regulator installed, but the window would cock just a bit, then bind up and overheat the motor. What I ended up doing was getting some silicon based lubricant spray and sprayed it in the tracks. Once I did that, it took care of the bind. Give it a try, I found an off brand silicon based lube spray for $4-5 at Meijer and it worked great. I actually did all 4 of the cars in our family (3 grand Prix's and one Ford Explored... Boo), and they all seem to go up and down much quicker.
 
I decided to just buy a new moter/regulator, works like a charm. only cost me 46 bucks. soooo im not crying about it anymore.. because i already put 3 grand into my car anyhow so what they hey!
 


I tried the new motor regulator root. It cost $300 and didnt fix the damn problem!

It turned out to be the damn switch... $30 off ebay

i looked at meijer and didn't find anything. my windows are a LITTLE slow as well...what was it exactly?
 
What really did the trick with my sons car is that I sprayed some silicon spray down each of the window tracks. Once I replaced the window regulator and it was still kicking out, I did this and it has been working well for a few months now.
 
Actually, now that I think about it, I bought the stuff at Home Depot. It is called Blaster SL Silicon lube. The cost was $2.97.
 
Yeah, I tried the sillicon spray route from home depot also. They recommended Jig-a-loo.
I couldnt stop laughing at the name. Its in a bright orange can.
 


Did that ^^ help your windows go up and down more freely?
And do you just apply it like along the rubber tracks right at the window? I would be worried it would be nasty and streak :(
 
just started having this problem myself. window goes down okay, but when i go to roll it up it just grinds to a halt and binds up (same point every time). have to pull up on it while holding switch up to even get it up all the way. going to buy the spray lube tomorrow, see if that doesnt fix it. if not, new motor and regulator, here i come.
 
I have a 2004 grand prix and my window will not roll down. When you push the button down it just makes a buzzing sound. I went to the junk yard and put another window panel on it and it still dosent work it does the same thing. All the other window panels light up but the driverside and when I push the button the other lights on door panels turn off. I need desperate help please.
 


Sounds like that one could be the switch. I would suggest taking the glass out and seeing if it works then. One other thing I noticed when I was working on my son's car is that once Itook the do apart, I noiced that one of the guides for the window had come loose and that might be he reason his original regulator went out. I had re-secrured the tracks and replaced the regulator ant was still binding. Once that was all done, I used that spray lube, and it worked line a charm.
 
Thanks Bill ile try that but also how do you get the motor out I took off my door panel and I see a metal frame in front of the window
 
If you can get your hand in there to loosen the pieces that grip the window, then you can pull the window out. You kind of have to wiggle the glass to get it out, but it will come out once it is loose. If you then try to see if the motor will go up and down with the window out, it will tell you if it is the tracks or not. If it does move without the glass, it might be the tracks. If it does not, it is either the regulator or the switch.

I had ordered the regulator before I pulled the old one out, so it is a lot easier to see where the bolts line up when you have the new one in your hand. THere are either 3 or 4 bolts that hold the hold thing in place. Once you take those out, the whole unit will come out. You have to unplug the wire harness before you remove it. You also have to tip it to get it out, but it does come out even though you see the frame there. It is not easy, and you will probably scrape up your arms doing the whole thing, because the edges are sharp.

If you do buy a new regulator though, you need to be aware that there are different regulators for the 2 door and 4 door models. They are also right handed and left handed (Drivers door and passengers door). I think I paid around $40 on ebay for a new one.

:confused:If anyone would like to take the time I would appreciate it.

I need a step by step on removing and replacing the regulator.

What appears to have happened is the cable has come off one pulley, the pulley has a jagged edge on it so I assume that is what has caused it (bad Pulley) they tell me I can't just replace the pulley and will have to do the whole regulator.
I am willing to do that because it is about to get cold and wet in OHIO.
But when I pull the door panel and look at that thing I think "Where do I begin?".
It is a 2000 4 door
