96 Grand Prix SE taking off in high gear when hot

So the 96 shifts great when cold and a moment after reaching operating temp it will take off in high gear 3rd maybe even 4th. It takes a lot of RPM to get the car moving. Shifting to 1st gear at a stop or moving does not help. I shut it off for a while and then it starts take off from 1st or launch from 1st.

there is no 2nd gear launch button on this car but it does not feel like it is taking off from 2nd it feels higher. the RPM is 3K or more and the coolant starts get hotter than normal, just under overheating.

Someone mentioned a relay or something electrical. Can someone shine some light into the potential of an electrical issue?

maybe its a bad clogged cat. how many miles are on your car, and when was the last tune up done to it?
 
I had a very similar issue with mine which was just recently fixed. On my 96, it was the tcc solenoid. However I was gettin cel codes for shift solenoids 1 and 2. When I got in there two of the 3 identical solenoids were cracked and the tcc's electrical plug fell off in my hand. Could be the same problem with yours. I did the work myself if you need some info on how to do it. It's fairly easy just takes a while. Is your cel light on? If so get it checked. It could very well tell you what's wrong like mine did.
