Hello,
I just bought a 1971 Grand Prix SJ. The key is stuck in the ignition in the run spot. Will not go into the lock position. I replaced the ignition cylinder with a new one, but still have the same problem. Could it be the neutral safety switch, or something else. Thanks

this is a long shot but im thinking the old gm cars with a floor shifter, the back part of the steering column between the key and dash moved when you shift it on the floor, try to turn the that part of the column. im pretty sure theres a linkage bar thats inside the engine bay by the fire wall, that goes from the outside of the column to the trans, it may be binding, seized or broken.

scottydogs is correct about the linkage; it is controlled by a "back-lock" linkage that is driven by the shifter.

I've got the 1969 Factory Service Manual pages for the back-lock linkage adjustment procedure. I believe the adjustment procedure is the same through 1973 (maybe all the way to 1977 on GP) I tried to attach the scans but the files are too large. If you PM me your email, I will send the scanned pages to you.

Make sure the bushing at the column-to-shifter rod linkage is present and in good condition. It's a cheap little part that causes all kinds of aggravation when it is worn or missing.
