4t65e drive sprocket seating problem

Hi,

I've replaced the forward band in my 4t65e transmission but I can't get the valve body back on. It appears like the drive sprocket is not on far enough (not seated) and is keeping the left side of the valve body from going on. I've taken everything back off and tried turning/wiggling/tapping the sprocket (with no chains on) but it doesn't go any further, and the gap between the sprocket and the trans looks way wider than any pictures I can find of a 4t65e. There is about 19mm between the back of the sprocket and the transmission case when I get it on as far as it will go. What am I doing wrong?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Yes, I'm pretty sure the plastic washer is in correctly. I've also tried test fitting it together without that washer (in case it was catching or something) and without the reluctor, just to see if it got any closer but it still seems like the sprocket is way too far out. I just can't seem to get the sprocket to seat all the way in.

I'm talking about the thrust washer on the back side of the driving sprocket. You should be able to see the feet/clips poking through the holes of the driving sprocket. I don't see the tabs in your picture.

Make sure you did not install the torque converter clutch Oring on the input shaft before you install it. It must be installed after the input shaft and sprocket are installed. It will not slide through the stator support with it on

I think this may be the problem. I didn't realize there was a washer behind the sprocket. Now when I look closer and turn the sprocket I can see 1 round peg line up with a hole in the sprocket (but only 1). If I try to push in when this 1 peg is lined up it still won't go back. Should there be 3 pegs? Also when I try to move this washer from the back side of the sprocket, I can't feel it. How do you get this washer realigned?

I don't think I removed this o-ring, but I'm not sure. Where is the torque converter clutch o-ring?

There should be 3 "split" locking tabs. All 3 should be visible when the washer is fully seated. There are 2 sets of holes. 3 for the thrust washer, and 3 for the reluctor wheel. You probably have one tab jammed into a reluctor wheel hole. Push it out and clock it to the other set of holes. You should be able to pull the sprocket out far enough to reach behind and finagle the washer.

Bottom row, fourth from left.

It's on the other side of the shaft, buried in the torque convertor. If you didn't pull the trans, you can't get to it.

Thanks for the info. I didn't pull the trans, so I guess I don't need to worry about the o-ring. What I'm seeing doesn't quite seem right. I definitely can't see 3 tabs or get 3 to line up in any way. I'll see if I can push it all the way back out and start over.

If I somehow broke this washer, what does it take to replace? That sprocket and shaft don't want to come out.

I doubt you broke the washer. I'll see if I can get a picture off something in my spare parts pile.

The sprocket and shaft will not come out from that side (left) unless you remove the TCC o-ring from the other side (right). That's what's keeping the shaft from sliding through.

Ha! I was right. 3 split tabs. I guess it's possible you mashed those tabs, depending on how hard you pushed the channel plate.

Wow, those are great pictures! Thanks, that's exactly what I needed. I'll take a look when i get home tonight and see if I can work that washer back in place.

another thing could be if the 3rd gear sprag sat fully and seated properly into the input/3rd hub. It's possible to have it hang up on one clutch disk and mess you up too.

I've had that happen also. That's when actual real transgel assembly goo comes in handy. Vaseline is a great assembly lube, but it doesn't really "stick" things together. The goo really holds the sprag in the clutch packs.

Thanks for all the help. That did it! It was that plastic washer getting in the way. It took forever to get it back aligned because there's not enough room to get my fingers back there. I had to use toothpicks. Also, mine doesn't seem to have the snap locking tabs, just regular round pegs so it doesn't want to stay in place very well. But this should get me to the next step once my gaskets get here.

Thanks again.
