i just bought a bonniviel with the 3.8 i kmow its not a gp but i bought it, and it had a knocking noise coming from the engine. i was thinking and hoping that its only a push rod, but would a bent push rod make it tick and mis? what do you think it could be?
thank you!

1. What year and model
2. If you want a diagnosis, you need to post a vid.
3. Congrats on the B'ville.. hopefully you got an SSE/SSEi

Possibly, but a bad bearing is more likely your issue. I see a used 3800 in your future. Probabaly ingested some coolant and screwed up the rod bearings if I had to guess without hearing it. Get us the info BillBoost asked and I'm sure someone can help.

You'll like the Bonne once you get it running good.

yes we need to see a vid. otherwise its just a guessing game. if it sounds low in the motor it is more then likliy a rod. if it sounds hi, and a little softer may be a bent push rod. if the car has a mis then this is more then likly it. a push rod may not be opening the valve all the way. we will wait for vid. to go further. good luck!

I took my rear valve cover off and one of my springs was broke and the rod was out of the rocker, so I figured out the problem and plan on fixing it saturday, thank you for your help everyone.

Please don't insult someone because they took the quick basic post approach like you did. You didn't supply enough info and off the cuff, OtherNick's post is the same caliber as yours. You didn't post more info to help us help you. There's no need to be insulting someone that took time to try and help.

Your parents taught you better than that. :th_thumbsup-wink:

i just replaced the tranny in my car myself and i put it all back together and now it wont start. i have fuel and plenty of voltage, but i dont have any spark.

Probably missed a major ground then, or forgot an electrical connector. Go back and trace all your wiring, starting from one point, and look for any missed/open connectors.

Just went through a similar problem. Touch the positive and negative terminals on your battery together and let them sit for 15+ mins. I used electrical tape and a screwdriver to run the current through them both.

make sure you un hook the battery first on this one.

doing this resets the computers.

My 2002 Grand Prix 3.8 needs an engine tranplant, rod noise. Will a 3.8 from a 1995 Bonneville swap in without any modification? Both are K code engines. My GP VIN is 1G2WP52K72F13007 and the Bonneville VIN is 1G2HX52K6S4266455. The '95 needs intake gasket and a waterpump, but does not knock, yet.

It will work. You will have to reuse your tensioner assembly, as the Series II motor in the Bonne has only 1 coolant elbow, while the one in your car has 2. Personally I would just swap long blocks and reuse your existing top end parts and call it a day. Of course don't forget to install new LIM gaskets, coolant elbows, and so on.

So I should us my intake set up on the long block? I noticed when checking part numbers that gasket set are different from the '95 3.8 to the '02 3.8 engines.
