2006 Grand Prix tranny noise in park & neutral

Hi All,

I have a base 2006 Grand Prix with 56,000 miles. While the vehicle is in park or neutral the transmission makes a whine noise. It is coming from the tranny for sure. In any gears the noise is not present. When I accelerate in park or neutral the whining becomes louder and faster. I hear earlier 4t65e tranny's have this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you could have a bad stator support bearing and possible pitted bearing surface on the drive chain sprocket. I see this pretty often when rebuilding transmissions. In Park or Neutral all of the internals of the trans free-wheel though and there could be something else causing the noise. If you have or can get ahold of a stethoscope that will help pinpoint what section of the transmission the noise is coming from.

Turned out to be the bearing on the drive chain sprocket. THANKS Trannyman95.
cost $775. was that a reasonable price? the tranny didn not need to come out to fix the problem.

Thats what I figured, it is fairly common to hear and see. That price may be a bit on the high side but any in car repair is pretty involving and replacing that bearing is a chore to do in the car! I wouldnt have expected any less than $600 labor plus parts to have a shop replace the bearing
