2004 grand prix aftermarket radio advice

I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2 without the monsoon system. (also I do not have onstar)

I have been looking at installing a new radio in it, but I have not found one that fits all of my criteria:

- steering wheel controls need to work
- sd card slot in radio
- everything in DIC needs to work
- chimes need to continue to work
not necessary but preferred clock needs to be displayed all the time (I know this is a rarity to find in these radios)

As I do not have much money to spend, it would be great if I could find it for cheap.

Thanks in advance

I believe to get the steering wheel radio controls and HUD (I know you don't have one, just saying) you have to do some wiring and funky stuff. I know for my brother's '01 GTP the previous owner had to do wiring and stuff to get the aforementioned to work with his aftermarket radio. Not sure about the 04+, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same way.

Don't quote me on this, but I think in general aftermarket radios don't play well with steering-wheel radio controls and HUDs. I could be wrong though!

First and foremost...pick any stereo you want, that is universal no matter what you pick. You need to find one that fits you, I can make suggestions, but you need to read things about what you will like and what you don't like. I like Kenwood stuff, the new DDX and DNX stuff is great.

Second, you need the right wiring harness that is meant to keep the chime working; This seems like a kit that will work. Not sure how you don't have onstar, do you mean you don't use it?

As for the DIC it will continue to work, not sure why you thought it wouldn't. Only thing you lose is the Date.

Kaiser, there are plenty of kits between PAC and AXXESS that give you your steering wheel controls, it doesn't affect anything with the HUD. Not sure what wiring was done with your brother's car but it sounds like he has a rats nest.

Crutchfield has changed the installation kit. I have their previous one (GMOS-1 I think) which was recommended for our cars. I don't have Onstar either, but that is still the "computer" to interface between your controller and the CANBUS system.

Since the OEM radio keeps track of time, the DIC loses the time & date display. Additionally, since I believe the time is used in the oil change interval calculation, you'll also lose that. I would ask Crutchfield if this newer unit considers that functionality, I tend to doubt it (but maybe that's why they've updated).

I have also had a problem where my chime will sometimes continue for about 90 seconds after I start driving the car, I also hope that was addressed with the new unit.

Ah, nice to know, well the radio station didn't display on my HUD with the aftermarket radio I briefly had in it - and (as bobc455 said) it messed with the oil change part of the DIC. I don't know either lol, he bought it like that and then sold it a while back.

Thanks for all the responses you guys

Looking to make a final decision
Here is what I have narrowed it down to:
crutchfield's chat adviser sent me this set up and said everything should work
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_070XR4120/Dual-XR4120.html
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_541RP5GM11/PAC-RP5-GM11-Wiring-Interface.html

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_12040GM10/Metra-40-GM10-Antenna-Adapter.html

the adviser would not tell me if this wiring interface would work instead of the one that crutchfield sells obviously so I would buy the more expensive one from them
What do you guys think?

Again, thank you guys for all your help!
