2003 Engine Rev and Shutdown Problem

My wife has a 2003 Supercharged Grand Prix. She has dealt with an issue where she drives the car and the engine will suddenly ramp up to 4000 RPM and the shut down.

After doing some research, it seems to me as if there Mass Air Flow Sensor might be messed up. My first try will be to clean it. I have not been able to get to it yet, hopefully tonight I will, but does anyone have any tips/input? I found a post that has a picture on where this sensor is located. So it shouldnt be a problem finding (unless '03 is drastically different from '99)

Is there any way for me to test it if it is faulty or if it needs to just be cleaned?

... I should add that this happens very sporatically and spontaneously. It happened to her within a mile of our house on the way to work in the morning. I have driven since then, for hours and it never happened.
