2002 GTP 95k miles and tranny goes bad?

Hey all,

The easiest way to explain this is by having you watch a short clip on YouTube. Video is titled :
Pontiac Grand Prix GTP - Busted / Broken Transmission

Just curious if I should just go with an overhaul or by chance is it isolated to just the solenoid packs. After it slipped and chattered I "gently" went through the gears manually and they are all still there but it is starting to surge and slip at 60 mph.

The tranny first slipped when I went full throttle from a rolling start at around 20mph. It downshifted to first loaded up for a split second and then totally disengaged in my opinion there almost seemed to be no clutching at all. No warning lights flashed at all.

I drove for another 10 miles babying it and everything was quiet. After that it slipped at 3000 rpm and made that terrible skipping ratcheting "snap" when I half throttled up a hill to get home. Amazingly enough it is still drivable and oddly there is no metal in the fluid yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Jeremy

mines kinda doing that but not as extreme... any advise?

Time to start saving and checking your options. I found a used one with 30k miles for like 800 shipped. Got a few buddies to lend a hand.. few days later ... i was rolling like new.

Personally I have chosen the GTP as a project car and since the tranny decided to fail on me an upgrade is in order. My plan of attack is a Raybestos Blue Plate Special clutch module, Transgo shiftkit, new Borg warner Solenoid packs etc, as well as the improved hardened components that the 4T65E should have had in the first place. The transmission will be rebuilt at the local transmission shop. I am shooting for the 380-420 bhp range so the tranny really needs to be a solid unit.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what else could be done during this build please let me know. Thanks
