I have a 2001 grand prix with just about 200k miles on it. The trans has been serviced regularly and gears 1 thru 3 seem to work well. I have noticed over time the car seem to have developed an abrut shifts at times almost like a tranny/engine mount is bad. Today on the way into work I notice the car was running about 4k rpm at 80mph on the highway. The car does not seem to be slipping it acts if the torque converter is not locking up. It apears that the car is never going into drive/torque lock up. I have noticed that while driving I can let off the gas and the RPMS drop way down and then I have to bring the RPM's back up to the driving speed to engage the trans again. I have also notice a whining noise of which I would describe as a power steering pump going bad. I am no sure if this noise is related to the trans or not.

Any helpfull insite would be great.

Sounds like you lost your 4th gear. Most of the time you'd hear no noise or anything just when your on the highway you'll see your RPMS pretty high. The splines on the 4th gear shaft are very weak and just strip and then you lose 4th gear.

Any idea on how hard a tranny swap is to do on one of these cars?
