2001 grand prix wont turn off

i have a 2001 grand prix se and sometimes when i go to turn it off the engine will shut off, but the key stops in the battery position so the stereo stays on and even if i take thekey out of the iginition the door beeps when i open it and the radio will stay on.

any idea what could be wrong with it, or what i need to do?

so the key wont turn all the way back? under the steering wheel there is a plastic cover 1/2 round under where the key goes, pop that off and stick a pen or small screwdriver in it and turn the key the rest of the way back.

there are write ups how to fix this but what i just said will help till better help shows up, at least your battery wont die tonight.

i had a similar problem, was a stuck solenoid in my case.... all i had to do was take apart my dash and clean it with electronics cleaner with the car off (looked like the previous owner had poured coffee all over the dash every day of their lives and only wiped off the noticeable stuff). i can now hear a slight *tick* coming from the dash when i squeeze the shifter when going into/out of park (the solenoid charging up)

ya you were right, i took apart the dash and put a new stereo in and cleaned it up a little and now it works right everytime, thanks guys great help

Thank you so much for this post. I bought my baby yesterday and had this exact problem from the getgo. I was starting to get concerned, but i tried the screwdriver trick, so happy that was it!
