2000 GTP- Sunroof switch gone out?

Hello all,

Joined as I need help with a problem on the sunroof of my 2000 GTP.

Got the car in may and love it but in november i noticed water coming in from the dome light panel and sunroof switch. At one point the sunroof just stopped opening and now I am wondering if the switch was fried or has the motor gone bad? I suspect the switch but am unsure and I know a test but I need to pull the panel out from the headliner and I am unsure of how to do so.

Anyone out there have any experience with this? I wanna see if I can fix this myself without having to go to GM and pay an arm and leg.

thanks, and sorry mods if this is in the wrong section, feel free to move if needed.

Not to try and steal his thread, my sunroof sometimes doesn't open when you press the button to crack it, and I have to push it to get it to open. It acts as if it is glued down. If anybody can help it'll be appreciated.

urbanslayer- it sounds to me like the sunroof drain hoses have become clogged or unhooked, thats the only way water can get in. Unless you possibly have a windshield leak. Water may have damaged the wiring or motor.

grandprixMI- It sounds to me like you have a bad regulator. Dirt gets in them, one day they hit a dirty spot in the tracks which you really can't access to clean, and it gets bound up and you get a rough spot in the mechanism or it stops completely because it thinks its shut, from the resistance.

Both of you- If you drop the overhead console and remove the visor clips and sunroof surround, you can carefully access / remove the sunroof motor. This at least gives you an opportunity to work the sunroof by hand and check for smooth operation.

Howdy, scottydoggs :) Yeah they are kinda like A/C systems, occasional usage keeps them healthy if you ask me.

urbanslayer- missed the part about how to get the console out ... its done with a "small flat-bladed tool" like a pocket screwdriver. The unit has tabs that pop outward to lock into the bezel. Look closely, there should be a spot on each side to get a tool between the two.

grandprixMI- Also- maybe your sunroof panel has shifted and is jammed. With the shade retracted you should be able to unbolt the glass and remove it to see if its just stuck. Could be it stuck once after sitting and now sits crooked in the hole or is jammed. Glass adjustment might fix that.

Thank you guys, I will try these. And my shade is stuck in the open position. You can pull and pull and pull, and it will not budge. I don't want to force anything so I guess it's staying open.
