I was leaving work a few days ago and was headed home using the interstate, when out of nowhere my car turns off at my exit. I was unable to get the engine to turn over but the radio would turn back on. I didn't hear any sounds as I turned the key. I was towed to my house, a few minutes after the tow truck lower my car in my drive way i tried to start the car and it came on. I took a day off from work and went to autozone to get my battery and alternator tested, all checked out well. My battery was about more than 5 yrs old. The next day, i tried to start my car and it wouldn't, later i replaced the battery and all seemed well. Today I was going to Publixs to pick up some yums to feast on, and my car turned off during my turn in the middle of the street, I manage to get it started a min later, I got home and turned it off and turned it back on and the tcs and abs lights went out(the warning lights were on since feb). Just to check a lil more, I drove around the neighborhood with no problems and most likely i'm still gonna try to get to work for 2 more days.

124,000 miles
I just received my super charger oil in the mail and finally got a girl to go out with me.

I'm no mechanic, just a rookie computer technician. I spend some of my time in the server room looking at my chilton book for the grand prixs. There was no clicking noise as i tried the car, so maybe no issues with the starter.

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!

HALP IS HERE!!

Your problem is a very common crank sensor failure.

When its on its way out, it will at random lose connection with the PCM and thus shut the car off.

thx for the quick response 5finger, is there a way for me the average but internet savy consumer to check and test that? i have the chilton manual in my grasp. Also is there a way to get my car started, just incase it turns off on the road?

I wouldnt even bother testing it.

Just toss a new in, they are under 50 bucks.

Its up the crank sensor if it wants to start again on the road, they are fussy like that. Sometimes they fire right back up, other times you gotta wait a while.

I think there is a write up on here somewhere with all the details on how to change it. The search box is hidden in the black up top.

thx for the info, im gonna try to continue to wing till friday or the weekend, and see if I can do it myself. You reply brought me hope, didn't wanna give up on this car, shes worth more to me than some of the women i've taken out to dinner or lunch.

Oh I forgot to mention, the check engine light is off, hasn't been for months and when it was on it was just the gas cap code. I have my own scanner.

What do you mean when you say wouldn't start?

The engine would spin but not start (just crank)?
or
The engine wouldn't spin at all (no cranking)?

it wouldn't spin, i made it to work this morning, im just trying to ponder whats going on, got it started this morning made my 20min drive to work, the 1rst day it stopped on me, my commute lasted more than 30 mins, the other day it stopped on me i went an extra distance past my home(30mins) and it stopped on me. IDK i'm trying to play Sherlock Homes without a clue, but could that be something as well. I remember asking a buddy and said it could be a coil pack overheating. I was gonna try replacing the crank sensor, but i thought long this morning, this is my only source of transportation and the buses went out of service where I live, so i may take it to the shop.

Your driving down the road and the car stops running. So when this happens you put the car in park, turn the key and here nothing...not any noise from the starter? If so, you may have an ignition switch or a wiring problem.

If it were the crank sensor the starter would be turning the engine but it would fail to start and run.

the 1rst time it happen, i couldn't get it started, Yesterday it happened, i put the car in neutral and started it. I only did it in neutral because I read that somewhere it can make it easier to start.

Please answer the question in bold. Noise or no noise from the starter.

The next time this happens put the shifter in neutral, wiggle the steering wheel back and forth and jiggle the key in the ignition. See if it starts. Many people have had problems with the ignition switch on these cars. There could be something wrong with the contacts within the switch or the transponder circuit may be pooping out.

When this happen i put the car in park, turned the key and I hear nothing and nothing happens. no noise from starter.

My wife's old 98 had a problem like this. She would turn the car off and then get literally nothing at all. No crank, no lights, no bell, just like a dead battery. Turned out to be a partially broken positive wire off the battery. It would move just a little bit and lose the connection. Move it just a hair and you would get power again. Very annoying to figure out, very intermittent.

Among many OTHER problems I had with my old Bonnie this was happening, had a bad battery connection (would die when running, wiggle and you got power back) and the Park/Neut switch killed over and it stuck in park and wouldn't start, had to drop to neutral to get it to crank.

But I wouldn't consider the Crank Sensor, as stated if it is not turning over at all when you try to start it then its starter, ign, or something like that causing the problem. However, if it tries to start but just wont (ie. engine cranks and cranks but no juice, there could be a sensor problem somewhere).

I don't wanna sound weird, but i love you guys, i've never been on a forum where this many folks responded to my question. When I do get my issue resolved I will follow up. But till then I will have to put the hot dates on the hold...

Lol yea my gf (of 5 years, dunno why she stays around lol) just laughed at me on our first date when half way to diner the Bonnie just died, she was like WTF? I just sighed and got out the wrench, torqued the nut on the battery post after giving it a little wiggle, and we proceeded on.
So sometimes it's not all bad... I mean stranded out in the middle of nowhere with a hot chick and a empty backseat leaves alot of possibilties while you wait for AAA lol

I took my car to a GM Dealership to get a diagnostic, the only thing he said was my Mass Air Flow Sensor was going bad and the reason my ABS and TCS lights were on was because of my module. I replaced my MAF later that day along side my oil change. But I don't know where to start on the module. I've been driving the car for about 8 days and doing alot of miles and have yet to stall out or whatever.

It's not the stalling that would worry me. It's the fact that when you tried to restart there was nothing, not even any cranking.
The only thing that could cause this would be bad ignition switch, wiring issue, a shorted sensor that is causing a problem with the PCM or some other control module.

Keep running it and see what happens. That's about all you can do. Let us know if it rears it's ugly head again.

thx for keeping up with my post rico, i really hope i don't see this problem again, especially in the middle of some traffic or more than 60miles from home.
