2000 Grand Prix GTP, PROBLEMS....PLEASE HELP....

Hello All,
Well everything has gone great with my GTP. However, recently I have been having a little bit of problem. When I accelerate from like a stop position and I let of the gas pedal my RPM will spike down like 300-500 RPM and then come back up to normal. I even had it the other day, I accelerated from a stop sign and then had to let off the gas pedal quickly after starting up a little ways, so I was at a slow speed with low rpm's and it done it and the motor died. I was able to start it right up and go but still done it. I also have noticed that when I am going down the highway and I set my cruise control or stay a steady speed like at 60 mph, my rpm's will spike up instead of down, it does it really quickly. Then it seems like after like I get off work and go run the car it wont do it right away. So it is something that it doesn't do it all the time but it is becoming more frequent. I am not sure if this is some kind of sensor or what. I was hoping to get some insight from you all. I am sorry if I didn't explain it very well. If you have any question please ask away. I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

start with a basic tune up with spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter and then see if that helps. with those many miles the car needs it. ud be surprised how really bad spark plugs make the cars run goofy.

its kind of difficult to diagnose when no maintenance has been performed to it assuming that nothing has been done.

Yeah, I haven't done anything to it since I have bought it earlier in the year. I just wasn't sure if this surging idle sounds like a sensor or throttle body or what could cause it, it dont do it all the time...I also wasn't sure if someone else has experienced anything like this before.

I think I will go ahead and plan on doing a complete tune up and see that helps out at all.

I appreciate the advice.

Thanks Rich

yeah np man. a lack of fuel pressure and a bad spark can cause goofy symptoms including what you described. so its best to make the car running like brand new by starting with a tune up. theyre all cheap and easy to replace

i mean i dont mean to ride someone's balls but Bill is like the end all be all and he agrees with me :)

Well on my way to work , about 25 miles into my trip it started to do it again. I then happened to stop at the car wash and wash the car. I then started it up and it didn't do it again the rest of my way to work which was another 15 miles or so....this makes no since. I am going nuts....:th_scratchhead:

Maybe ya just got lucky? lol I kiddd I kidd...

Rich..it's the goofiness that made me think pack vs general tune up. A set of wires and plugs never hurt our cars though. Since they run so well, often we neglect the normal schedule.

I am going to do a tune up on it, any suggestions on what brand to use on my plugs and wires etc...that way if I cant get them locally at my Oreilly's or Auto Zone, then I will order them.

Also, what is the best way to check my coils and see if it is a coil or should I take it to a mechanic. I just try to do as much as I can myself cause I cant find me a decent mechanic anywhere around my area...

Thanks for helping out. You have been a huge help...
