2000 Grand Prix GT Transmission problem

Hi all,

I just joined here. I have loved Pontiacs ever since Knight Rider came out, you see my user name. I just recently bought a 2000 Grand Prix GT. I knew there was something not exactly right with the transmission. I know I shouldn't have bought it but I really wanted a Grand Prix and this one was such a good price I couldn't pass up. It has 126K on it. The transmission shifts just fine but when I have my foot on the accelerator it is not functioning correctly in 4th gear. I can go from 4th to 3rd no change in RPMs, but if I don't have my foot on the accelerator and I switch from 4th to 3rd the RPMs do change. The RPMs at 60mph are around 2700. I have done lots of research and came to the conclusion that it might be the solenoid, be it the TCC or PCC or whichever one it may be. I took it to a transmission shop today which they put on a scanner and came back with these codes: 730, 1441, and 1811. Then told me what they meant and then the transmission would have to be taken out and looked at and more than likely have a rebuild. I tend to disagree that it needs a rebuild. Anyone else have this problem before and if you did what fixed it? I like the car and don't want to trade it in but if I can't figure out a fix (under $800) then I will have to trade for something else or sell and find something else. I can't keep getting only 21mpg and then have it eventually go out on me. Thanks!

Well unfortunately it sounds as if the trans will have to removed to be serviced. I've heard stories of people driving the car without the 4th gear but I can't confirm. Maybe someone can chime in.

Hmm...ok I thought about taking it to a GM dealer and see what they had to say just to get a 2nd opinion but they may just say the same. If that's the case I will just have to trade the car in. :(

you can find a used trans for like 400, and if you have some tools you could have it changed in your driveway in a weekend. or most shops will charge 4 to 500 to swap it for you. so that kinda even puts it into your price range.

You typed the codes in, and didn't bother to tell us what each was. Sorry...not your personal code googler.

P1811 is max adapt shift, I know that one. 1441 is probably an evap leak,
What's 730 is that incorrect gear ratio?

Here's what I'm seeing. You have a stripped 4th clutch hub. Aka the most common failure for what you describe. It's not that bad of a fix in the car. Well, I think it's not bad. Search on my user ID and "ea sy clutch hub" without the space. That should bring up the thread on how to fix the hub in the car. While you are in there, change the EPC soleniod and add a transgo shift kit. TripleEdgePerformance.com is a great place to get all the parts. Let Dave know I said hello.

Ok, one morning or afternoon and you'll be fixed up. Now what should be do for the rest of the day? :th_thumbsup-wink:

I'm not going to bother...need a AWD anyway. Time to trade to car in on something better. Should have known better than to by an ex-rental car anyway. Another mistake what else is new.
