2000 3.8 gp dies

Hello all, I have been hovering around enjoying the posts for awhile, and finally have a problem worthy of your expertise. I have a 2000 model 3.8 Grand Prix with 138,000 miles. It is in great shape with one exception. About once a week it will just die. It has never done it at road speed, always when slow, or when turning into or off of a road. It always starts right back up, I just put it in neutral and turn the key. Another odd thing, and I don't know if it is related. Sometimes when driving at road speed, 45-70 mph, the tachometer will drop to zero and the trac light will come on. When it does this, the car keeps running, it just has a slight shudder when the tach drops out. I took it to the dealership, and they said it has to show a code before they can fix it and they had it for three days and it didn't show a code. At least they didn't charge me. Does anyone have any ideas before I start throwing parts at it? Thanks for your help.

Definitely the CPS. The sensor itself cost about $40 if I remember correctly. At the top you will see a link 'How To'. Click on that and you will find a write up that I did that will show you how to replace it.

Holly crap you have allot of posts dude

I got a cot in the corner over there and I practically live on this place. But it helps me sharpen my analytical and diagnostic skills and the only way they improve is to jump in there and hope I got it right and learn to say I was wrong when I dont and learn what I could have done better.
