1999 Grand Prix GT "Choking under high acceleration"

Hello guys,

I just bought a 1998 Grand Prix GT 2 door has 73,000 miles. Transmission fluid is pink and clear, shifts nicely, no jerking nothing what so ever. Engine runs strong. Car was in pretty good condition when I got it, just put on brakes, rotors an changed a wiper motor. I noticed today when driving on the highway (This just happened) once in a while when I'm around 60-65MPH I will feel a slight "Shake" or "Choking" on the gas pedal and slightly on the steering wheel
as I drive, though this is more the gas pedal. Besides that it runs great. No problems, as I said shifts fine otherwise, transmission fluid
looks almost like it was just changed. The previous owner told me that he left a fuel filter in the trunk for me to install. I don't know
if its a clogged fuel filter or I bought one with a bad tranny? Is this a sign of a bad transmission or more likely something else?
Rarely happens and when it does, only around 60MPH and above when accelerating. It keeps accelering, just almost like a little bit of
a "Choking vibration" feel as it accelerates. What do you guys think? Any ideas? I suspect it wouldn't be a bad tranny or anything since it does not jerk
what so ever one bit as I drive it into gears, and reverse and everything is smooth. Where should I start?



 


its where id start being you just got the car.

first thing i do is change all fluids and get things up to speed for my own records.

depending on if its felt on one side more then the other it could be a axle going bad, they start to vibrate when your on the gas, nothing when you coast.
 
Full tune up would be my start point. Plugs, Wires, Air&fuel filter, PCV, check the MAF. Do you have the service history? LIM is a known problem in the 97-03, any break in there could cause issues under WoT/heavy acceleration.

Low miles normally doesn't signal a cat, but sometimes you lose the lottery so to speak and get one that dies early.

Also, check all your rims. One of mine had developed a crack that caused a shudder/pull that alignment couldn't fix. Spent forever tracking that down.

Be extremely careful doing the back three plugs. Driver backside(6 I think) in my GT hated getting installed and actually hairline cracked right where the porcelain connected to the base.

Has it had the recall work done yet? While a cause for your issue here, is something to get taken care of

My Friend who has been driving GM cars his entire life and Grand Prixs and Grand AMs drove it tonight 40 miles. he said its definitely not the ttranny and agreed with you guys.

I just went to RockAuto and ordered AC Delco brand of Top grade Iradium spark plugs AC Delco Brand and Wires along with an air filter. I know he already replaced the PCV valve. I will look at the MAF tomorrow and I have a fuel filter in the trunk. Will change it as it comes and keep you guys updated.
