1998 Grand Prix GTP Transmission questions.

Ok, recently got this car, it has quite high mileage, like in the 200,000's.

Anyway, the thing runs quite well, except some transmission issues. Sometimes they are there, sometimes not.

I had it scanned and the only code that popped up was the one in relation to the torque converter being stuck.

The car will sometimes hard shift into reverse or drive, and when driving it will shift into second kind of rough. Sometimes it will act as if it does not want to get out of second, accompanied by what seems low grinding?

I've not had the trans fluid changed or anything YET. Instead I've been looking at another trans for it.

My question is, should I go ahead and have the fluid changed, trans flushed and a filter added, or just consider the replacement transmission?

The car hadn't been driven in a long time, and most of the miles are from the highway. Anyway, any and all advice is welcome.

If I was u, I would get a fluid change (drop the pan). DON'T flush the fluid. If u experience the same problems after you changed the fluid then I would just get a rebuilt trans or a used one with low miles.

find a low mile junkyard trans if on a budget or check out triple edge performance if looking for a rebuilt

my trans had some of the same issues at around 185k miles
fluid change didnt help much

Upon more consideration I've decided to go for a low-mile used trans.

My problem...or worry rather is that it seems the stuck converter is something that happens quite often.

Anything I can do to sorta prevent that when I get another trans?
