1997 grand prix gt wont start

Hey guys I'm having some trouble with my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. Whenever I put the key in the ignition and turn it over I hear it trying to start but it won't. My fuel pump is good brand new one in it and I can't seem to figure out what the issue is. I thought it might be the fuel pump relay i put a brand new one in didn't change it. Eventually I hard wire it to a switch to bypass the fuel pump relay and I'll start every time. Any idea what this issue could be?
