1995 ignition switch replacement

Just acquired a 1995 Grand Prix SE with the 3.1 engine. While the car is very nice, the starting system has failed and I have figured out it is the ignition switch that is faulty.

I found the Sparky thread on how to replace the switch without removing the steering wheel, and was wondering if that procedure would apply to the 95 model year since his write up is on a 2002.

For the actual switch you just drop the column to get to it. For the lock cylinder you gotta pull the wheel

Yes it was the actual switch. Thanks for the info, l67ss. Got it swapped out with a new switch this evening, and it works as advertised.

The gang connector is the same as the later model Grand Prix, but the switch is connected via linkage like the older columns that I have worked on. As a bonus, the low oil level light finally went out. The PO had already changed out that sensor without success. Now on to fix the motorized antenna, and I'm done fixing things on this car. Might upgrade the stereo to one that can play modern formats, but not much else.

I was premature in saying that the oil level light was fixed with this. Could there be a short in the harness somewhere? I don't have any tech info on this car at all. Can I just unplug it?

I teach my daughter to check the oil level herself, but if the feature is there, I would like to have it functioning.
