1995 Grand Prix Coupe Rear Shocks and transverse leaf spring question.

I have purchased the quick struts to my 95 grand prix for the rear however going over the haynes manual it says i need to compress the fiberglass transverse leaf spring before removing the strut. The tool that compresses that spring is a few hundred bucks used.
Is there a way to safely remove the strut without the compression tool. I watched a video where a guy did a 92 and he basically jacked up under the spring and on one of the wheel studs to line things up for the bottom bolts on the strut. I have never done anything like this I did my grand am which was a later model and that was a true strut assembly.

free rental at autozone. or take em to a shop that has the right tools. cause i can only assume you like your teeth and the way your face looks. eating a spring cant be pretty.
