My friends uncle does professional installs and I asked him for some help and he said my 2004 grand prix with monsoon system and onstar does not have 12 volt switched source and would need to tap into the ignition. Is this true or is there another source for 12volt switched... i feel like it may be the purple wire...please help.

haha just trying to install a head unit I have a 7in touch screen jvc and was confused on the wiring configuration so I consulted my friends uncle and he said my only problem with wiring it up is I need a 12 volt switched source and he said there was none on the wiring harness... according to the12volt.com it leads me to beleive it would be the purple wire which they lable as the power antena, however I'm not sure and I feel there has to be another way rather than tapping into ignition.

I remember he did a test to find a switched 12volt(accessory wire) but didn't find one but if any one has any info to keep me out of my ignition it is appreciated.

in the trunk it should be an orange wire that is ur 12v but it is a constant power so u will need a switch to turn it on and off!!

The purple is a somewhat switched +12v source. It gets the job done for my subwoofer amp, but it does pop sometimes when I open my door or trunk with the car off. I think that because the chimes/onstar run through the stock stereo (and therefore the monsoon amp in the trunk), the monsoon amp needs power sometimes when your keys arent in the ignition at all.

The wiring harness you buy to plug into your factory harness tells you everything you need to know. If it is telling you that you have to get the 12v switch from someplace because it isnt in the factory harness then follow the directions.
Newer cars have DATA wires to control things. Basicly computer wire that communicate to another computer.
To get yourself another 12v switched suppy go to igntion switch or to BCM for the ignition. The power ant. is not suppose to be used for anything but to tie into your factory harness for any type of powered antenna. As for any monsoon systems with amps as long as you have your remote output lead going into your remote output lead in the factory harness plugin you will power up your factory amp.
You hook it up incorrectly you can do serious damage to the car. Chances of a dealer fixing it under warranty is VERY slim then.
So FOLLOW the directions very closely or pay to have it done.
