12 volt outlet stopped working, melted my plug and burned my hand!!

I was driving down the road the other day when I noticed my phone was no longer charging. At times the USB plug would come loose from the outlet( the outlet looks kind of beat), usually I wiggle it and bam, magic happens and it works again, this was not the case this time. I wiggled the plug and nothing happened, so I started pulling it out right into my hand. Big mistake! The USB plug was burning hot, so hot in fact it the metal connectors left a burn on my hand. The outlet no longer works, I checked the 15A fuse located behind the glove box and it still carries a current and is not burned but my volt meter shows no power going to the outlet, with the car off and in all positions. I have heard through the grapevine that there is a fusewire connected to the outlet, is it possible that burned up? I purchased a new outlet I'm going to instal regardless since the OEM one is worn out. From what I have seen from research it seems I have to remove the center console to access the outlet and wiring? Is there an easier, better way to do this? I'm very mechanically inclined so this is a little repair for me but I don't like having to do more work than needed haha. If anyone has a link to a good repair write up or video I would forever be in your debt! :th_rockon1:

P.S, a 24 hour shift, beer and trying to not to type like a 5th grader is pretty difficult lol :th_beer-smash:

There is no other way to access the outlet that resides on the pass. side of the console without at least removing the console top. You didn't mention what year GP you have so I can only speak for the 97-03's. Open the cupholder, then gently pry up along the edge of the console top. It just clips in. Be easy on it and pull straight up and little by little the clips will let go. May have to move the shift lever to D to get it completely out. Then you will have access to the outlet. Never tried changing one this way but it will open up the area where it is mounted and where the wire harness is connected to it.
