04 rear hubs question

First time poster.

04 Grand Prix with 100k. Mechanic says both rear hub assemblies need replaced and there is a slight wiggle on both sides when I grab the tire when the car is on a jack. Having the dealer replace them is not a good option at the moment. Where can I find good assemblies at better rate than GM? Planning to buy them and have a local shop put them on.

Been running as is for a couple months but need to get this fixed before I have more expensive problems.

Thanks for the help.

^^^X2. Do it yourself. Save money. Jack up the rear. Remove wheel, remove caliper bolts, hang it off to the side, 4 Bolts to remove the hub (will need a hammer and something to pry with). Replace hub and do everything in reverse to put it back together.

Do I need to grease the new assembly upon installation? If so what grease?

Thanks for the help! Plan to DIY it.

Anything is better than nothing, but I would use an anti-seize grease since it's aluminum on steel. Just My opinion.

If you live in a high road salt region, you may need more than a hammer and pry bar. I had to use a pneumatic chisel to pry them out of the housing and they didn't come easy at that (just a warning). The hub assemblies are sealed so the greasing lambokit is referring to is just the fitup diameter.

May need heat. Caliper bolts on mine were put on with red loctite, had to take a blowtorch to it to get it off. Chances are you'll ruin those bolts getting them out, you can get replacements at ACE hardware or anywhere that sells bolts.

I hate timken bearings. There dog ****. The cheap generic napa once last longer...and there lifetime warrenty, so when they go out u go get new ones :)

New to this DIY repair and upgrade stuff, but I think I will need a new rear wheel hub on the passenger side. I'm suppose to take to the dealer to get it scanned. Went to the dealer to price it out and it was d@mn near $400 for the rear wheel hub. Plan to try and do it myself, but I'm wondering if I could use a impact drill to get the Caliper bolts out?

If they have loctite and you can get the impact tool on it, it should come out. I've never had a problem after breaking them loose but then, can't remember noticing any loctite on any of my vehicles. I would worry more about getting the hubs out per my earlier post.

Oh, just ordered 2 SKF hubs for the fronts. $130 a piece from Rockauto. 96K miles. Not making noise but do have play. Car is going to my sister-in-law so I need to take care of this.

I picked up SKF hubs off Amazon nice and cheap. The only thing I'm aware of that you need to consider is if the car has traction control or not. This means that the rear hubs would have a wheel speed sensor if the car has 4 wheel abs. No sensor if the car doesn't.
