'04 rear caliper piston

I have a question about the rear caliper piston on a 2004. The pads I bought had a wear indicator which pretty much made it necessary to install it inboard or it would interfere with the caliper bracket if installed outboard. This pad also had a little pin cast into it that looked like it would catch one of the cutouts in the face of the caliper piston. The other new pad did not have a pin or a wear indicator.

My question is about the rotating/self adjustment action of the rear piston. Does the pin grab/lock the piston and that is what makes it screw out during use, facilitating the self adjustment process?

Thanks for the help.

the pin is there to keep the piston from rotating. once you replace the pad, screw the piston back in, put every thing back together and pump the brakes a couple of times to bring the pistons to contact the pads again
