04 GTP Noise

I have a clicking noise (it's not a knock - I had a GM that knocked and this is totally different) coming from my car at acceleration or load. It does not happen at idle.
All fluid levels are great and the intake gasket was just replaced less than 90 days ago due to a slight oil leak.

My husband has listened with a stethoscope and stated that he's not hearing lifter noise. He says it's coming from the top of the engine, but can't locate it. After listening to it, my father thinks it may be the exhaust???
I can make the car make the noise in park if I rev it to around 1500rmp and hold it there.

I don't know where to start & any help would be appreciated!:th_scratchhead:

sound like rocks tumbling at idle in the sc does it?

the coupler is likely bad. take the sc belt off, the turn the sc pulley one way, then snap it back the other, if bad it will click, and you feel play. very common issue.

does sound like a exhaust leak.

let it cool off, then when cold fire it up, have it on ramps or jacked up so you can get under. then with your hands feel for the exhaust leak. hot air will hit your hands. you can also look for a black soot mark, those are leaks too.

if the top side pans out good. get under the car and do the same for the pipes and resonator. look for soot, and feel for the leak.

dont forget the egr tubes, they like to split open and will leak also.

Thank you so much. I just wanted to confirm with someone else that it sounds like an exhaust problem before we tear into this thing. It was owned by an elderly lady so I know it wasn't ran hard. And we've already dumped tons of money into it redoing the ABS system. Even though it sounds like total crap, will it hurt to drive it? I don't want to cause more damage to anything that's for sure.

it should be ok if its a exhaust leak, you need to take the steps to figure it out. then you'll know for sure.

edit: you could also seafoam it, its a cleaner that smokes like a muther afterwards, it will show a leak for sure.

Will the seafoam show in the engine compartment if there's an exhaust leak?
And will I need to change the oil after? I literally just changed the oil less than 5 days ago.

So your resonator is making the noise? And not the exhaust manifold gasket? How did you diagnose it? Sorry for all the questions :)

Sea foam through the vacuum line will not affect the oil. They may foul spark plugs though.

Well, to start I believe the car will get some seafoam tonight or tomorrow. I'll follow up and let you know what happens.
Thanks for all the advice, I really do appreciate it:)

if its not had a tune up yet do that soon. the seafoam can foul plugs. not always but if your close to 100,000 miles do the plugs and wires.

the can of seafoam says 1/3 can in the gas tank, 1/3 in the oil, 1/3 in the vac line.

NO NOT USE IT IN THE OIL. do the 1/3 in the vac line, save the rest for another car, or dump the rest in the gas tank. its good injector cleaner too.
