04 gt sunroof

I'm trying to fix my sunroof. I was having problem even getting power to the motor but i fixed that. Now my sunroof doesn't open when I move the switch, it just moves back a tiny bit and stops. Then I can move it forward a tiny bit. If I take the motor off the sunroof assembly it seems to function properly, but then I try it with the position sensor on it (still off the sunroof assembly) and it only moves a tiny bit again. I'm assuming it needs to be synchronized, but I could be wrong. Please help!

I have two grand prixs 04/05 with sunroofs, both had bad sunroof position sensors doing the same thing you described. as far as timing you will need to have sunroof fully closed then remove glass, drop down headliner/sunroof, remove motor/position sensor. New sensor has a pin in it that is set for fully close position. Remove pin after sensor installed.

I did mine in the car, removed sun visors/dome lamp/A pillar trim, lowered front of headliner, then removed front 4 sunroof nuts, loosened rear nuts if necessary to lower sunroof. With glass out of the way made it easier to see and swap out sensor. Will take 2 people to removed entire headliner and sunroof if you want to go that way.

Okay, I understand what you were saying now. That is similar to what i did earlier when I removed the motor and sensor. I even opened up the sensor to check if there was any damage inside causing it to act up but I didn't see anything and I tested it for continuity. The sensor is very basic, just three gears and a small pcb.
