ok i scored a 04 grand prix gt with the 3800 for very cheap ... here is my story - Got it cheap 120k had check engine light on...
2 codes, 1 was because the temperature sensor was bad and it was running to cold at operating temp - the other was p0420 {cat} i knew it was running rich because of the {bad} sensor so i replaced bolth.... and cleaned the throttle body with spray because on startup it would stall unless you tapped the gas....
after i replaced the cat the trans issue seemed to get worse. not better like i had hoped { i was hoping the computers were getting confused because of the cat}
Now for the transmission it engages smooth doesnt slip 1st or 2nd or reverse --when it gets to 3rd it clunks a little sometimes, and is def a Firmer shift and 4th seems ok for the most part ---- But the main issue is when doing slow speeds on a back road with slight inclines inbetween 25-40? it searches a little {almost like the converter is coming out of lockup in the higer gears} HIGHER speeds on the highway are fine no issues - downshifting no issues ....I barely noticed it when its doing what it does - but i can see the tach moving a little maybe {1500 rpms?} if i accel it's fine and doesnt search
I dont know the history of the tranny and everyone has something diff to say.about changing fluid etc.etc.. I just went to the local tranny guy and he said off it - or replace it because its on it way out.....He didnt plug it in or anything.. didnt seem like he wanted to be bothered -- Any
