04 comp g shifting problem?

While driving in 4th i have noticed that giving it enough throttle to downshift to 3rd. The engine will race for about 1/2 second then it will catch 3rd. I havent noticed this in any other gear. I have checked the trany level, its ok. fluid looks clean. It had a strainge smell coming from the engine bay once. I have never driven a Sc car before. Is my trany going out?
 


This might have something to do with your fuel mileage. Please have the codes read to see if there's anything going on that isn't illuminating the CEL.
