02 coolant temperature sensor

I just replaced the temperature sensor and the temperature guage is reading hot, and way over at that, but that's when it was cold also and when the engine is off. I took it to o'reilly to check it and it's still coding. Now, the old one was only in about half way, my friend threaded the new in all the way, could this be the issue or could it be shorted out or a bad sensor like o'reilly's say. and if it's a short, how do I fix that? Thanks in advance.

Is it a delco one? The aftermarket ones have been known to be bad out of the box, sometimes 2 or 3 in a row. Went through this last year. Ended up going to GM to get one.

I saw something online that if I unplug it, start the engine and it goes cold it's the sensor. However, could it be that it's threaded in all the way and not half like the old one? I unplugged it and it went cold.

Bad sensor. Took it back to o'reilly and got a new one, works fine. However, when trying to put it on the gray plastic broke in half so I said screw it and taped the damn thing for now. Temp gauge is good. Thanks for everyone's help.
