01 GT Vibration in Front Right End

Hi folks, 2001 GT , and just lately I have noticed a very annoying vibration type effect in the front end, It happens when I go over small potholes or even train tracks at a moderate speed, the slower the speed, the less vibration. I took the front right tire off today and not knowing a whole lot about cars, I decided to have a look. I believe it is a strut, covered with a ribbed flexible plastic, as I lifted it up I noticed that parts are deteriorated(plastic parts) The silver shaft under looks fine. My question is for you all, do you think this part is defective and if so, Is this something that someone that is good with tools but not so knowledgeable around cars could fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated, just trying to save a few bucks and get my hands dirty!!

In all reality, you generally won't be able to tell if a strut is bad by looking at it. The plastic cover is just for added protection, and not all cars have them. Another note, bad struts don't cause vibration. They usually only cause thumping noises, and a ride that makes you feel like you are on a water bed. I will highly suggest that it is something else causing the vibration. How do your tires look? Look at the tread, are they chopped at all?

What kind of sound are you hearing? It could be a ball joint a wheel bearing a number of things. First start off by telling us what kind of sound you are hearing.
