My key was stuck in the ignition. I removed the solenoid as seen in another forum. It appears where the top of the solenoid went into the lock mechanism there is a pin in there that is sliding around and occasionally still causing the key to not return to the lock position. if I jiggle the key or take the pin from the old solenoid and push it into the hole I can then get the key out. How do I get the pin out of the housing? Thanks Dave

That solenoid most likely isn't working due to the signal from the shift lockout in the shifter I would look there that's usually the cause in the shifter
 
Ditto that. My 1998 had a broken wire in the shifter harness inside the console. As a result the key wouldn't release without pulling the plug out of the bottom of the column and manually releasing it. I fixed the wire and problem solved.
