So One reason I hate building my own system is the problem I just had... It stopped working and I couldnt figure out why. Power to the MOBO to start the dang thing and the LEDs but no power went elsewhere and I went through a diagnosis process of what it could be. RMAd the processor and MOBO and no success... Other than getting two brand new parts . Finally figured out what it was. I overstepped my PSU. DOH all that work and two months of down time for nothing. And to top it off I dont have money to buy a good one now. This blows

Sux, Ive overlooked the PSU before in tech tinkering, makes you feel like an idiot. Google and somewhere *escapes me right now, cuz its too early* but there is a PSU wattage calculator program to input what you have in the build and how big of a PSU you ACTUALLY need to run the system without faults. Then hitup newegg.com and see what you can find, itll take a couple days for shipping but they usually have great sales every week. May get lucky

I have an AMD xII 3.4 Dual Core CPU, MSI 870A Fuzion mobo, 2x 2gb Corsair DDR3 1600 ram, nVidia GTS250 GPU, Sata 3gb/s 640GB and Sata 3gb/s 1.5TB HD, Sata 22x dual layer DVD Burner, 7 blue led 140mm fans in my CM690 CoolerMaster Case and its all running off a CoolerMaster 550 watt PSU. It doesnt take a huge PSU for a good gaming system to run, just gotta figure what you need and up the bar just a bit for safety

Hmm that interesting your specs are relatively close to what I have and you say it runs fine on 550. I wonder if I just burnt mine out or something (it is 3 years old or so) And yes im a religous newegg shopper . However, I do reference tigerdirect too and which ever has the lowest price gets the bid.

So I did what you said and googled it and did some calculation a 550 would probably suit me. However, I looked at the capacitor aging option and it says for a power supply to alst approximatly 2 years I would need a 550 to push it. So that could say my powersupply just got too old and took a crap. I find this interesting and informative

I actually just upgraded mobo, cpu and ram about 4 months ago, last month threw on the Coolermaster N220 Hyper or something like that, its like the V6 GT just not as flashy

Still giving burn in time and nerves to settle before I OC anything, first full build so Im nervous about tinkering too much, alot to be wasted if I break anything and it run soooo smooth right now.

The PSU is actually about 2 yrs old as is the Case, dvd burner and one of the HDs but its supporting the whole system flawlessly. If I do get another GPU for SLI like I want Id need to upgrade, same if I dabbled in Water Cooling but that REALLY makes me nervous ... 1 leak and bye bye $1200 system

I would look at a 600-650 if your using a Quad Core or higher wattage CPU or running SLI but unless your system is just retarded you don't need anything too crazy

No SLI just a huge 1GB GDDR5 VC and a 3.2 quad as said. I can buy a 550 that was in my computer for 30 so it might be a way to go I was looking at some 700s but they were like 60$ so im questioning it

IF you do gaming like I do then 3 years of constant pull on the PSU with a system like your running is about avg. May kick it up to 600w just to be safe unless you plan to do some upgrading in the near future.

My buddy is rocking his 2.8 QC with an older ASUS AM2 board, 8GB DDR2 1066 Ram and a nice VC with like 2 burners and 3-4 HDs (i forget exacts) but I know hes been on a 600watt PSU for 2-3 years since the system was built and it hasnt had any problems to date And he is slightly OC'd on the CPU and Ram, VC is still stock settings

So update. Found a 700W PSU for $40 after a mail in rebate it has a 4 start review. Its almost too good to pass up the deal. Its beeter than any quality 600W I have seen

by huge you mean small right?

Most people get a PSU thats 1.5 or 2 times their need then end up wasting power because most PSU's seem to be most efficient at 75% load.

My comp needs a HDD that will pass a smart test and is SATA.

^^IF your referring to that... I meant huge as in huge. Ive seen alot of people drop $100+ on a modular 1000+watt PSU for a system with my same specs that only requires 450-500watts at the most. That's not needed but alot of people don't take time to figure that out, they think its a badda$$ system and needs the biggest baddest power source so it can run optimal.

    Mine is a amd quad 630, 2.8 ghz, 4 gb ram, and 750 gb hd. ~$500 + 20" widescreen monitor = $600-ish

    I bought my 850 W because it produces 11 dB at 1 M up to 400 W or so.
