K&N Cold Air Intake, worth it?

Just wondering if anyone has some advice on the K&N intake. I want a little more growl out of the car, I'm a student so I can't afford an Exhaust swap...Anyone find any truth to the 13+ hp claims it adds? Just wondering if it helps the engine sound a little deeper too...I've got a GT 00'.:th_scratchhead:
 


First off, the 13 hp claim is for the supercharged 3800.

Second, I purchased a K&N FIPK. For what I needed (a kit I could just throw on the car and not worry about it), it was great. Others have had great success with homemade intakes. Truth be told, I'm going to be modifying the kit I purchased as the heat shield is worthless.

MAYBE 13 hp to the crank, depending on your setup. An intake adding WHP is exponential and adds more based on different setups. In other words it is not the same for every car.

In short K&N setups are not the best for our car. They are NOT cold air intakes as the do not seal off your cone from the engine bay [unless there is a new model i am unaware of]. If you are light on cash i would make your own fenderwall intake. Their is a thread describing how i can post it if you decide to do so.

If you have some $$ i recommend the Wizaired or the Cold air inductions box.

I have one on my gtp and felt a bit of a difference not major but a bu=it and deff heard a diff an if you decide you still want one i got one im about to take off i'd be willing to sell you in a few weeks when i get home an get it off my car. If interested pm me
 


i have it on my gtp... i cant really complain about it... but i woulve gotten the wizaird because thats a true cai... i dont like fwis because they can get dirty pretty easily
 
I have K&N CAIs on both my cars. I got them at AutoAnything when they were on sale so I paid about what folks are paying for Wizzairs and some others. It was easy to put in, and the air filter itself is huge compared to the round ones used on others. Would I go with another one next time? Maybe, but I like the looks of the K&N over some of the others. If you've got a homemade one, it often looks like it. And some of the other name brand ones look homemade as well. I like that K&N connects the ECM with screws, not zip ties that others use.

YMMV, but I'm happy with my K&N. I bought an eBay special for my wife's Mustang, but I'm thinking of getting an K&N for her as well.

Sure makes my Impala louder as well, and I like the "exhale" I get from my GP when I turn the engine off. Maybe the Impala does it too, but I can't hear it over the headers and exhaust. :D
 
i just put a fipk kit on a 96 impala and I LOVE the sound it almost sounds like there is a monster under the hood and the gas peddle just pokes him in the a$$ with a big stick. it has a deep growl when you take and wind the motor up but if you just drive around some what tame it sounds like a normal stock intake other then the sucking sound that you can hear at idle(sounds very cool tho waiting at a light :))

I put in a fairly large spectre cone in my car, i took the original intake tube, and just angled it a little bit to connect to the cone. The cone basically sits where the air box used to be. I do notice better acceleration on the highway, and it does sound alot better at around 3000 rpm. I only spent money on the cone, so im quite pleased :)
 
hooked up my spectre cone on the end of the existing tubing with an extra 6" of pvc... it sujcks air like crazy on startup and sounds horrible, but after 5 minutes it quiets down and runs great....also to note is you must reset the pcm or your mpg will suffer, it's easy just disconnect the battery for a half an hour, and it resets itself....
plan to build an enclosure over winter, using special plexiglass called lanex or lenar or something like that, supposed to restrict heat better than everything else
 
You're MPG's are going to suffer with any CAI. Reseting the battery does nothing. Hot air = more MPG
