Where is a good place to get one? I'm looking to pick up 1 or 2, for back up purposes of all kinds of things. Where would a good place to get them? Of course for a decent price.

CompUSA has the lowest prices on almost everything you need for pc'. If you dont mind ordering online you might try newegg.com or tigerdirect.com
 
I got all mine at walmart, I got (2) 1tb piggy backs and a 500gig piggy pack, didnt pay more then 100 each. one is a maxtor two are western digitals.

compusa and bestbuy cant compete.

:th_scratchhead: erm... well the compusa just down the road from me didnt get that memo... unless ive been buying imaginary parts from an empty warehouse lol compusa did not close nationally, tigerdirect.com bought them out and closed the suffering stores down.
 
Look at your local bestbuy.

DONT FLAME ME.

Right now 99% of External HDs are going to Firewire or E-SATA so with that being said bestbuy is clearancing out there older models. I got a simple drive 1TB for 60 bucks.

If you want portability then get something 500GB or less because anything more you will need a secondary power source.

Just curious what is the reason you are buying an x-HD?

I'm military and want all my movies and music in one place, for when i go TDY and on deployments. It gets boring sitting in hotel rooms/dorm rooms while away from home. So i figured if i can get a decent size external hard drive to keep everything on versus filling up my laptop hard drive.

Whats the benifit of connecting via firewire or e-sata? How do i know if i even have these connections on my lap top?
 
Your laptop will have either USB 1.0 or USB 2.0/2.2. Most laptops around are not 1.0 anymore but the 1.0 and 2.0/2.2 are different speeds.

Firewire is the new version of USB. It has a lot faster transfer rates but it is a little more expensive.

E-Sata is the newest and the fastest. It is a port that is only used for HD's. Newer computers have these inside the case for your HD. Even newer computers will put another port for X-HD's outside of your machine.

If you post your model number of your pc I can tell if you have Firewire or E-Sata.
 


hp pavillion dv6700, i'm looking to spend around 100ish but want to get the best bang for the buck. what are some of the brands to stay away from? or are they all mostly the same?
 
Bestbuy here is selling 1TB "mybook" ( I think that's what they're calling them) harddrives.. for $70 or so.

yes there was a VERY select few that tiger direct kept operational. If you live near one you're lucky!
 
i ended up buying a Western Digital 500 gb from the BX for 109.95. The more i kept looking, i was wanting to get a 1 tb but the only ones i could find were ones that required AC power. I was wanting more portability so that wouldn't work.

I actually just bought a 500gb WD. Prolly the same one but I got it from a friend in school for 35 bucks. I got tired of always plugging in the 1T.

If you got any more questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer (In school for IT).
 
my advice is make your own external..
reason is most externals have a 1yr warranty,
if you make your own, the enclosure has usually a 1 yr but your hard drive will have like 5yr..
most externals will need power except maybe some of the 2.5" drives, but you are getting smaller capacity.

do you typically get web access when you use your laptop?
because you can get a server at home that has webaccess to your stuff..
I have an HP Media Smart Home Server, its small holds 4 hdd's has free remote access to all my stuff.. its great.
 
if he had a $100 budget making a x-HD or home server is not going to happen.

Also running a stable secure home server is not easy for average users. The keyword there is SAFE AND SECURE.
 
yeah i'll be the first one to admit that I'm computer retarded. the home server sounds like a good idea but i wouldn't know where to start or maintain something like that.

I am still thinking about getting a 1tb or bigger to keep at home cause my wife takes a lot of pictures and i would hate to have her laptop crash so i would think i could use something like that as a central back up for both our computers.
