Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe - Car tattoo finished! Pics and video.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

What 4th?

No I do mean 5th gear on the Accord.. Should have clarified. Till the GTP is driving around, I'm driving a manual shift accord. The clutch on the accord is going, so I found a used 4T65E out of another 98 GTP for $300 with 120k on it. Picking that up and hopefully getting the GTP running and registered before the clutch in the accord blows completely.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Snapped a pic of the underside tranny stamp. Look at all that oil....

IMAG0217_zps49272fcf.jpg

Pic of oil filter... that's not oil actually.. Thats the grease from the engine mount. The mount exploded and sent grease everywhere.. I'll be degreasing the engine and the bay before it's put back in.

Engine finally out.

IMAG0220_zpse9884124.jpg

Left the driver side CV axle in because I spend roughly 4 HOURS working on the passenger side one.. Was a huge PITA.. Couldnt pop the ball joint because i couldnt unclip the pin to get the castle off so I opted to remove the strut and unbolt the tie rod instead. Didnt have a crowbar so I ended up making an attempt with a screwdriver, breaker bar, simply yanking, twisting and yanking.. A simple 18mm wrench from above did the trick. Also the downpipe bolts werent coming out, so I used a saw to cut it off. I'll probably weld it back together and re-use it, or order one from wbody store.. Now it's time to degrease the engine, the engine bay, Bedline the bay and drop in the new trans. That'll be done over the weekend.

Apologize for the lack of pics this time around.. cell phone was near dead and not much happened besides popping the one axle and pulling it out.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Transmission that came out. Apparently 8XA means 98 GTP, but it has the webbing on the back for non-W body, or do the GTP's have the webbing part?

If anyone can help me out and tell me if this will work or not.. =/

GM FWD Transmission ID charts

Transmission going in... And apparently this is a 4t60e from a 97 non SC grand prix, but was pulled off of a 1998 GTP....

And the old spark plugs

IMAG0225_zpsb85b66ef.jpg

Didnt get much sleep, so I bedlined the bay. I will probably have the assembly back in the car on Tuesday, Just have to buy an open ended 17mm for the trans line, or spend the $23 for the trans line.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Well so far it's just been headaches. I think when I put the rebuilt trans in it, I'll sell it. So if anyone is interested in it let me know.

On the bright side, it's gotten me into a line of work I wanted to try, so I cant be too upset over it. Pictures of trans teardown coming next.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Ya know, when the rebuilt goes in, it'll only make sense to keep it. Saving $60/month on car insurance, cheaper parts, cheaper mods, easier tuning methods available. I think I'll clean up the motor while it's out also. I think when it's all done I'll have a sense of great accomplishment and actually keep it. Built not bought.. Anyhow, Drained the trans. I'm at the peak of shade tree mechanic right now, with the trans propped up on 2 logs. Surprisingly, it looks very clean. I'm surprised it's a blown trans. the pan was perfectly clean. almost nothing on the magnet in the pan. the fluid is mostly clean also, but there are some flakes in it. probably clutch material.

I'm only taking it apart outside. I'm going to use a tarp on my living room floor for assembly.

The specs are just snow.
IMAG0235_zps85bca0ae.jpg

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Good thinking on the keeping it, snow sucks. Though it looks like you killed an animal with the fluid drippings in the snow LOL.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Thats AFTER covering it up with snow haha. I was draining it balancing it on 1 stump earlier, then the bucket when it was near full, tipped over and spilled almost everything. So I added the second stump

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Well I think I need a new differential. Not sure. The cover is scored pretty bad and the differential housing is scraped up. So that might have been the cause of the failure. Flakes of metal going where they're not supposed to. The shaft it's attached to looks awesome. No chips in the gears, the input sun gear slides on and off with no problems. If this is any indication this will be a pretty straightforward rebuild... Once I find my T40 and T50 sockets....

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Well it's fully apart. Onto teardown pics. Everything is in it's own baggie.

Lotsa bolts.
IMAG0244_zps82dcee38.jpg

The oil pump. Seems to be in perfect shape. Turns perfectly without noise.
IMAG0245_zps59287a85.jpg

Valve body. The check balls stayed in place thank God.
IMAG0246_zpsa94600f6.jpg

Chain set. Reluctor wheel had almost no play. Chain didnt give me an issue. The 4th clutches were missing quite a bit of material.
IMAG0247_zps416b7659.jpg

Going to venture this is what caused the no forward range movement. 4th clutch shaft.
IMAG0248_zpse3629889.jpg

All the major components. The stove pipe is in great shape, no chips. Forward apply band had some material missing. The rest looks to be in good shape, but it's all getting torn down. New clutches and bands going in.
IMAG0249_zpsda734fb3.jpg

So that's where my project sits right now. Stay tuned.:th_winking:

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Still working on it, but thought I'd give a small update..

3rd and input hub disassembled
IMAG0250_zpse7071cf8.jpg

3rd clutches.. They all look this bad
IMAG0251_zpsa321fb53.jpg

Besides the 3rd clutches, nothing seems out of order. Input clutches dont have any chips at all, apply pistons are not scratched or scored, all rubber is in good shape. None of the spring packs got bent.

Also looked at the 4th gear apply plate, has some minor scores on it, but I dont think that's overly critical. The steels on 4th have some heat spots on them. Anyhow, taking apart the 4th hub now.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

4th hub and 2nd drum seemed to be in good order. Ordering the rebuild kit from triple edge tomorrow and also getting a hardened clutch shaft to replace the stripped one.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Well It's arrived! Started re-assembly today. So far I have the 3rd and input clutches soaking and the 2nd gear clutches / hub assembled. Giving it a rest for the night.

Re: Jevik's 98 GTP coupe

Small update. Everything is together up to the channel plate. I noticed the output shaft seal needle bearing that sits in the channel plate is completely shot. So I need a new one of those. The entire trans should be finished with assembly on saturday/sunday, then the engine/trans reinstall begins next week.
