I haven't been on the forums in about 2 years because I sold my 99 GTP when I blew the trans. The guy I sold it to put a new trans in it, then sold it to his friend, now it's for sale yet again. I have the opportunity to possibly pick it up for $600 because from what I understand it smokes alot. What I'd like to do is pull the motor and build it. It ran a 14 flat when I had it and I like to make it a 13.0 second car. I'm 19 and I feel like I know alot about engines for my age but obviously not enough to tackle this project on my own. How hard is it to pull the motor and trans? Any idea what a shop would charge to rebuild the motor just in labor? I'd really love to turn this thing into a total killer, but I am a student and I'd like to keep it on a $2500 budget less $600 for the car itself so $1900 total to build the motor and make sure the trans will hold the power. Any thoughts? Thanks again

600$ is a good price. but pulling all that out is extremely difficult for the unexperienced. I myself just put a new engine in my car and rebuilt it and it took me alittle over a month

and 1800 for the engine (65k)
    200$ for gaskets

Does the whole subframe have to be dropped or can just the motor and trans be pulled?

But that brings me back to the topic of my level of skill and the fact that it's all going to be done in my driveway. Would this be an appropriate starting point for an aspiring mechanic?

a transmission swap is not where you want to start with a car unless you have some knowledge on it already. ive done it, but i used a lift at my brothers place of employment. if i had to do it in a driveway it would have been a hundred times harder.

From what I understand the trans slips, but I can't be certain. I have to talk to the kid who redid the trans and obviously test drive the car as-is.

IF it blows up on the way home I would consider that burned. You should be fine buying it at the price.
