98 GTP engine hits and tac stops working

I have a 98 GTP road warrior with 168,000. When driving down the highway I hear a thump sound, feel something like the engine seized and the tac stops working. It is a very noticeable jolt sound. It has happened three times now. When restarted the tac always works. The engine mounts I can see all look and feel good. No noticeable oil or antifreeze in the engine compartments. A little oil in the water.

Any love on this problem from anyone?

No, it keeps running. No temp increase or anything. It seems like a seizure or a extremely large backfire. Every keeps working but the tac dies, but starts working again after the engine is restarted again.

Cruise control keeps working too. I hope my warrior is not sick, this is my second one, the Grand Prix is a tough car and hard to kill except for the trany after 150K.

sounds like a bad crank sensor. the buck may be the engine stalling and then re firing up.

common sings of a bad crank sensor is the tach drops to zero, and then it stalls, may or may not fire right back up. some times a hr later it will start, or the next day. and it almost never sets the check engine light.

Yea she keep working, just makes me worry. What would feel like a catastrophic failure, make the entire car feel like she hit a large dog or small calf, kill the tac but keep on working?

This is slmost guaranteed to be a crank sensor.

If you watched the parmeters, you would see the run time counter reset. My first crank sensor did this hiccup, which is technically a stall and restart. Oddest part of mine was the tach never quit. The shifter light did blink though. Because it was the pcms way of saying "you started in a drive gear". Which we all know..isn't supposed to be possible.

To me it sounds like the pin in the differential is walking out.. I've had it happen in a gtp and a Dodge stratus.. you will be driving and hear a bang, motor will stop dead in it's Tracks if the torque converter is locked and it happens like if your on the freeway.. if it gets worse it will eventually start to lock up the front wheels, yes even at 65mph on the freeway there will be a 1 second front tires lock up. Eventually you will blow the entire diff and case off the trans... Rebuild the diff now while it can be done with the trans still in the car..

I know.. I'm reading everything and it may be a old thread but they ones I read without conclusions I figure why not give my 2 cents to anyone that still drives these cars.... Like me lol
