Think about getting an 08 GXP

First of all I have read reviews about the GXP time and time again and my only main concern are the staggered sizes of the wheels/tires. Do any of you have a major problem with this such as finding sizes and such? I also heard about the trannies -ha trannies- I'm concerned but not so much. I recently sold my 04 GTP and missed it but wanted another and decided to go with the GXP, I currently drive a CTS and my other car was a 08 Saturn Sky Redline[thing is nasty fast]. In short would any of you recommend this car?

I like them.

The trans is still the same has the GTP trans but are powered by the LS4 5.3 V8, the trans can handle the power and still be very strong for the life of the car. If you beat on it and act like it owes you money all the time its not going to last. For a normal daily driver with some fun here and there its going to be just fine. I do recommend that the trans fluid and filter are changed more often because the LS4 block is aluminum and tends to keep the trans pretty darn hot and that shortens the life of the fluid, so changing it more often is better. Say every 40k ish instead of what GM says 75-100k.

I have an 05 gxp. When I got it, the previous owner put the same tires all the way around it. 245-55 I believe. Not sure why, but it does help with tire rotation. Shopping online for tires you'll have no problem finding the correct sizes. 255-45 front 225-50 rear.

im currently searching for tires i want at decent price, previous owner has mismatched rubber on front and back.

uhm trans goes easy, check fluids in them, make sure you dont have any warning lights in the dic. dod helps burn oil so check see how bad it is.

I may not be the best person to ask, but if you want an opinion on the quality of the car, I would say it is sub-par. I have an 08 GXP and its a freaking blast to drive, but I have more issues with this car than I care to mention. The car only has 40,000 miles on it, but it has been in the shop non-stop since I bought it two years ago. I have replaced the brakes twice (pads and rotors), the rear strut, the power steering pump, power steering rack is bad (not repalced yet), and the list goes on. I have had an engine light on for emissions that I am still trying to fix (see other post). I did replace the wheels but that was just usage. I did mate them as the originals. I also put snows on in the winter.

I agree that all cars have problems, but I have found this one has more than most I have ever owned. Case in point. I was driving the car last night, put the high beams on and could not get them to go off. Nothing I tried worked. I ended up pulling all the fuses. Got them to go off, but as soon as I put the high beams back on, they would not go off. Never had this issue with any of my other 3 cars or in reality, with any car.

Another issue people encounter with the GXP is higher usage of oil. It deals with Displacement on Demand crap. A simple tune to remove the DoD, and no more issues. Not like it uses a crap ton of oil, but a little more than normal. Plus removing it you may lose 2-3 mpg at most.

Either it uses quite a bit or whoever did my oil change before I got the car didn't put all the oil back in. One way or the other my GXP was almost 3QTs low on oil.

Most places only put 5-6 quarts in when it actually takes 7. My low oil light comes on after it gets 1 quart low.

^^^Mine nvr came on. I'll just assume the dealership didn't actually do an oil change, but reset the DIC instead. Which means I get to spend $$ on an oil change soon just to be on the safe side. <_<

I've heard way too many stories about oil change places cheating people when they arent looking, Example: Not changing the oil and resetting the system, then taking the customer's money. If the typical customers I deal with at Advance are like the typical customers that go in for paid oil changes... they'd never notice.

It takes 20 minutes and I dont even get dirty anymore after I learned the tricks doin it a couple of times.. not worth it to pay for it imo.

Anyway I never drove a GXP but I've seen them cruising around and they seem cool, everyone says they're a blast to drive and as far as excessive problems go... go on ANY car forum for ANY make and model and you'll see atleast a handful of people saying "This is the most troubled car I've ever owned." Not to say that the previous posters problems arent real, but that I guess some individual cars on the production line might just have inherited more likelihood for problems and that shouldnt reflect on the whole line of cars?
