Top Speed?

I have a 2004 GTP Comp G, basically stock except for a K&N Air Intake.

I just cleaned the filter the other day and was able to get up to 125mph. Around there it started hitting top speed due to air resistance = engine hp to wheels, though I feel that if I had a little bit more room to drive maybe it could have pushed 1-3mph higher.

Before I cleaned the filter it topped out at 123mph, and while still having room to accelerate, it couldn't push past 123mph.

Both runs I never hit the governor, just the engine couldn't push any harder. I've felt the governor on a previous car, so I know what that feels like. I'm pretty sure the governor for my car is the stock 142mph.

Has anyone been able to get to the governor (142mph) without some major modifications?

Also, anyone have any idea how much HP and top speed I could get for getting the computer tuned?

Keep in mind this is just the supercharged 3.8L with a K&N Air Intake. Everything else is stock. Though I will be replacing the spark plugs & wires soon. I got about 76K miles on the car right now.

mine did 137-138 stock. stock down to the stock air filter. well i did have new plugs and wires tho.

but i dought i will do that again, im not trying to blow up my motor/trans putting high loads on them like that.

Exactly why I only have 2 runs put on here, I don't go this fast most the time, but once in a while I do just for fun. I doubt they would have put the governor at 142mph if they thought it was going to seriously damage the engine when only at top speed for a few seconds.

yeah, that was there intention. to stop people from wrecking the motor...not quite.

at that speed the load on the motor is very high and detonation is bound to happen. your coolant and transmission fluid temperatures are rising quickly. your oil is beginning to spin voilently around the crank, no longer oiling the rest of the motor properly. also, if you hit fourth gear expect to buy a new transmission.

What do you mean "if you hit fourth gear expect to buy a new transmission"? The car drives in 4th gear all the time, cruising on the highway = 4th gear. Easy way to check, switch from automatic to the manual override Tapshift, this shows the gear the car is in, on the highway, it is always 4th gear.

4th gear is extremely weak on these transmissions, and he's talking about at WOT, not cruising on the highway. If you try to put that much power through it, you'll burn it up in short order.

I'll keep that in mind, don't really intend to push the pedal to the floor very often anyways. Whole point of thread was just curious if anyone has gotten that fast, is it good for car, probably not, but if someone has already done it, why not explain the circumstances and how fast they went with whatever mods they have.

Also, the second part "Also, anyone have any idea how much HP and top speed I could get for getting the computer tuned?" Has remained unanswered, if anyone knows some HP increases for a tune do tell.

Thanks Bio, yeah I didn't expect to get loads of extra HP but a few more would be nice. Guess it depends on how much it will cost if it is worth it.

Hmmm...APPARENTLY I went over 150 against an STi...that was with the XP/3.2"/headers/LS1TB/Tune/3.29's...etc. Car was very shakey and unstable so since I was starting to lose ground I let him go...only a COUPLE times I have ever gone over 100 on the street..it is no where NEAR safe, or smart.

I just took my car up to 140 the other night. Make sure you have ZR rated tires, as they are rated to go that fast. My Comp G takes longer to get up to that speed, then my old Trans Am, or my Ducati, but it drove well. I have always had good handling characteristics from this car while at high speeds.

You know tires are rated at the speed for 3hrs continuous, so unless you did that those tires are pointless.

Well, most of the better quality skins, are ZR rated (186mph). If you are going to haul @$$, why risk it? Plus, they are a much stickier compound, which with our whiny motors, traction is key!
i just read this, so i don't know about your 3 hour explanation??? where did you here this?
Speed rating

The code is made up of one or two letters, or one letter and one number. It indicates the maximum permitted speed that the tire can sustain for a ten minute endurance without being in danger[citation needed].

Why do you need to go that fast anyway? Anything over 100 is beyond stupid...hell even 100 isn't SMART...but I can't say anything...I've raced before, but I shut it down well before 140.....these cars weren't made to go that fast.

true, but i am an adrenaline junky, and sometimes i would rather go 100+mph on my ducati, but then there are days where i want to go 100+mph with heated seats, and being more safely enclosed than being on my monster.
